The Lord of the Rings – A Musical Tale Cancels UK Run at Theatre Royal Plymouth

The planned return of The Lord of the Rings – A Musical Tale to the UK has been cancelled, with producers confirming the eight-day run at Theatre Royal Plymouth next month will no longer go ahead.

The production, directed by Paul Hart, originated at the Watermill Theatre in summer 2023 where it won the WhatsOnStage Award for Best Regional Production. Since then, it has been staged internationally, with adaptations in Chicago, Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore.

Inspired by the works of J. R. R. Tolkien, the musical features book and lyrics by Shaun McKenna and Matthew Warchus, and music by A. R. Rahman, Värttinä, and Christopher Nightingale. It first premiered in 2006 at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto before transferring to London’s West End at Theatre Royal Drury Lane in 2007.

The Plymouth run was originally scheduled to launch the production’s new international tour. However, unforeseen changes to the tour routing prevented the UK-based production company from securing the necessary dates beyond Plymouth.

Producer Kevin Wallace expressed his regret in a statement:

“Cancelling the sold-out, eight-day run at Theatre Royal Plymouth is a hugely regrettable outcome, and we want to assure audiences that this decision was not taken lightly. While continuing to work on alternative international dates, it has not been possible to confirm the wider tour dates in time to make the Plymouth season viable.”

Wallace also thanked Theatre Royal Plymouth for their support and assured audiences that the creative team remains committed to bringing the show back to the UK and abroad. “The Lord of the Rings – A Musical Tale has always been a journey – rewarding and at times challenging, and we remain absolutely committed to bringing the production to UK and international audiences in the near future,” he said.

Ticket-holders for the Plymouth run will automatically receive a refund from Theatre Royal Plymouth and will be contacted directly with details.
