The Inbetweeners could be heading for the stage, with reports suggesting the cult British comedy may be adapted into a theatrical production as momentum builds around a broader return for the much-loved franchise.
According to new reports, a stage version of The Inbetweeners is being explored in the wake of the West End success of screen-to-stage comedy adaptations such as Only Fools And Horses. The project could reportedly take the form of either a play or a musical, with its famously outrageous humour expected to remain intact for theatre audiences already familiar with the show’s irreverent tone.
Part of the appeal, insiders suggest, is that fans would be turning up knowing exactly what kind of material to expect. Rather than softening the show’s most notorious jokes, a live adaptation could lean into the crude, awkward, and anarchic comedy that made the original series such a defining hit for a generation of viewers.
The reports arrive as The Inbetweeners also appears to be edging closer to a screen comeback. The beloved E4 series, which last aired in 2010 before spawning two successful feature films in 2011 and 2014, is reportedly the subject of a new project linked to Netflix. While details have not been officially confirmed, the current suggestion is that a deal is being finalised for a new film that would bring the franchise back to audiences 16 years after it first left television screens.
That possible return has been building for some time. In October, creators Iain Morris and Damon Beesley confirmed that plans were underway for a fresh chapter involving the iconic quartet after signing a deal with Banijay UK. At the time, it remained unclear whether that revival would take the shape of a television series, a film, or a stage adaptation. The latest reports suggest the answer may ultimately be more than one of the above.
Banijay has already signalled that the agreement opens the door to a multi-platform future for The Inbetweeners, with rights spanning film, television and stage. That broad remit has fuelled speculation that the franchise could be revived in several forms, capitalising on both nostalgia from original fans and a wave of newer viewers who have discovered the series through streaming.
Much of the excitement centres on the possibility of reuniting the original cast. Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, James Buckley and Blake Harrison became household names as the awkward, chaotic school friends at the centre of the show, and it is hoped any new project would bring them back together onscreen. Emily Atack, who played Charlotte Hinchliffe, has also reportedly been linked to the hoped-for return.
The enduring popularity of The Inbetweeners has made it a natural candidate for revival. Its mix of cringe comedy, adolescent bravado and brutally recognisable teenage humiliation has helped it remain a touchstone of British comedy long after its original run ended. Recent exposure on streaming platforms has only strengthened that legacy, introducing the series to a younger audience and helping to spark renewed interest in the property.
Joe Thomas has previously made clear that the cast would be open to returning, noting that the group remain close and would be enthusiastic about working together again if the right opportunity came along.
For now, no official confirmation has been made on either the stage production or the reported Netflix film. But with Banijay actively developing the brand, the original creators back in the mix, and audience appetite clearly still strong, The Inbetweeners may be preparing for a new life well beyond the sixth form common room.
