THE FULL MONTY is Back and Bolder than Ever

A major new theatre tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of the beloved British film THE FULL MONTY has been announced. The production, based on the original screenplay by Simon Beaufoy, will return to stages across the United Kingdom in 2027, bringing the story of a group of ordinary working-class men who decide to put on an extraordinary show back into the national spotlight.

The tour is being produced by Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham and Buxton Opera House, in association with Mark Goucher and David Pugh. It marks three decades since the release of the iconic 1997 film that captured the hearts of audiences worldwide and became a cultural touchstone for its humour, heart and unflinching look at life in post-industrial northern England.

Simon Beaufoy, who wrote the screenplay for the original film and later adapted it for the stage, said that while much has changed in the world since THE FULL MONTY first debuted, the core themes of the story remain as urgent and resonant today as they were thirty years ago. He spoke about the universal need for laughter, human connection and dignity in times of hardship, and expressed his delight that the “Monty men” will be on the road again for a new generation of audiences to enjoy.

Beaufoy’s words in the announcement highlight how the story’s blend of humour and poignancy continues to connect with people. He said that despite how much society has evolved since the film’s release, audiences still crave stories that make them laugh and feel understood. He also noted that the characters’ resilience, humour and vulnerability are qualities that still resonate deeply with people facing economic uncertainty and social challenges.

The stage production will be directed by Michael Gyngell. Gyngell, whose role involves bringing this beloved story vividly to life on stage in a way that honours the original film while making it fresh for theatre audiences, will be supported creatively by a strong design and production team. Choreography and intimacy direction are by Ian West, whose work will shape how the ensemble moves and interacts in the show’s memorable physical moments. Jasmine Swann is responsible for set and costume design, while Andrew Exeter is the lighting designer and Chris Whybrow is the sound designer. Marc Frankum serves as casting director.

While casting details are still to be announced, the creative team assembled suggests a production that aims to deliver on both the humour and emotional depth that made the story such a hit. Past theatre adaptations of THE FULL MONTY have been praised for their ability to recreate the energy and community spirit of the original film while adding new dimensions through live performance.

The tour is set to open in Sheffield on 15 January 2027. Sheffield was the setting of the original film, and starting the tour there holds symbolic significance. In the years since the film’s release, the city has become synonymous with the story’s celebration of working-class pride, friendship and resilience. From Sheffield, the production will travel to a wide range of venues across the UK. Cities on the tour itinerary include Cardiff, Nottingham, Aylesbury, Woking, Bradford, Brighton, Southampton, Hull, Buxton, Manchester, Belfast, Truro, Southend, Cheltenham, Dartford, Wimbledon, Norwich, Glasgow, Liverpool, Birmingham, Leicester and York.

This broad tour routing ensures that audiences throughout the country will have the opportunity to see the show in person. It reflects the ongoing popularity and cultural impact of The Full Monty, which has enjoyed enduring appeal through different media formats, including film, television and theatre. The stage play version first premiered in 2013, nearly two decades after the film’s original release, and has been performed in various venues ever since.

THE FULL MONTY began as a modest British comedy film that went on to achieve substantial international acclaim. Directed by Peter Cattaneo and written by Simon Beaufoy, the 1997 movie tells the story of six unemployed steelworkers from Sheffield who, inspired to make money and regain their self-esteem, form a male striptease act. They decide to go “the full monty” by performing a complete striptease, a strategy that proves both hilarious and oddly empowering.

The movie’s roots in working-class culture and its sharp social commentary struck a chord with audiences around the world. It became a box office success and won numerous awards, reinforcing its status as one of the most memorable British films of the late twentieth century. The blend of humour, pathos and humanity made it a film that transcended its genre and appealed to a wide spectrum of viewers.

Over the years, THE FULL MONTY has inspired adaptations in different formats. In addition to the stage play version by Beaufoy, the story was also adapted into a musical and a television series, each exploring the core themes of community, dignity and friendship in its own way. The stage adaptations in particular have allowed audiences to experience the characters’ journey in a live setting, adding a new layer of immediacy and connection to the narrative.

As preparations continue for the 2027 anniversary tour, theatre lovers and fans of the original film can look forward to more details about casting and ticket availability in the coming months. With its mix of heart and humour, The Full Monty remains a compelling celebration of everyday people facing life’s challenges with courage and camaraderie.
