Taylor Trensch Sinks His Teeth Into Title Role for Bat Boy: The Musical at New York City Center

New York, 25 June 2025 — Fresh off his 2025 Tony nomination for Floyd Collins, versatile stage star Taylor Trenschwill headline the cult-favorite Bat Boy: The Musical in New York City Center’s annual gala presentation. The limited engagement, running 29 October – 9 November, marks the first musical theatre season curated by the venue’s new vice-president and artistic director, Jenny Gersten.

A Cult Classic Returns

Bat Boy, a darkly comedic pop-rock musical inspired by a 1990s tabloid legend—follows a half-boy, half-bat discovered in a West Virginia cave as he seeks acceptance (and struggles to curb a certain thirst for blood). The show features:

  • Book: Keythe Farley & Brian Flemming

  • Score: Laurence O’Keefe (Legally Blonde, Heathers)

  • Orchestrations: Tony winner Alex Lacamoire

Dream Team on Deck

  • Director: Two-time Tony winner Alex Timbers (Moulin Rouge!, Here Lies Love)

  • Music Director: Andrew Resnick

  • Choreography: Connor Gallagher

Timbers’ flair for blending satire with spectacle makes him a natural match for Bat Boy’s off-beat charm—expect inventive staging and a fresh visual bite.

Gala Spotlight and Honouree

Opening night on 29 October doubles as City Center’s prestigious annual gala, honouring Broadway producer Bee Carrozzini of ATG Entertainment. Funds raised will support City Center’s mission to make the performing arts accessible to all New Yorkers through educational programmes and discounted tickets.

About Taylor Trensch

Trensch’s eclectic résumé spans:

  • Broadway: Camelot, To Kill a Mockingbird, Dear Evan Hansen (title role), Hello, Dolly!, Matilda, Wicked

  • Off-Broadway/Regional: Safety Not Guaranteed (BAM), The Seven Year Disappear opposite Cynthia Nixon

His knack for blending vulnerability with razor-sharp wit should make his Bat Boy both poignant and delightfully feral.

What’s Next?

Additional casting and creative team members will be announced in the coming weeks. Tickets for the limited run, including gala packages, go on sale 15 July via New York City Center’s website and box office. With Timbers at the helm and Trensch ready to take flight, this Halloween-season revival promises to be the hottest ticket in town, fangs and all.
