Stephen Sondheim’s Last Musical Here We Are Set for World Premiere this Autumn

Stephen Sondheim’s final musical Here We Are is a highly-anticipated show that is set to have its world premiere in September 2023 in New York City. The show is based on the surrealist comedy The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and The Exterminating Angel by Luis Buñuel and features a book by Tony Award nominee David Ives. The story follows a group of wealthy guests who are trapped in a room during a dinner party and a party of guests attempting to eat amidst unexpected interruptions. Directed by Tony Award winner Joe Mantello, the show is set to be a limited engagement in The Shed’s Griffin Theatre. More details about the show’s casting and ticket on-sale information are set to be released soon.

The musical, titled Here We Are, has been a project that Sondheim had been working on before his passing in late 2021. According to his friend and collaborator, Cameron Mackintosh, a substantial part of the work had been completed, but the show was not yet fully finished. However, it seems that the musical will now be brought to the stage, much to the delight of theatre enthusiasts all around the world.

Stephen Sondheim is an American composer and lyricist best known for his work in musical Theatre. He was born on March 22, 1930, and has been active in the entertainment industry for over six decades. Sondheim has written music and lyrics for some of the most iconic Broadway musicals, including “West Side Story,” “Gypsy,” “A Little Night Music,” “Sweeney Todd,” “Into the Woods,” and “Sunday in the Park with George,” among others. He has won numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to theater, including eight Tony Awards, an Academy Award, a Pulitzer Prize, and a Presidential Medal of Freedom. Sondheim is widely regarded as one of the most significant figures in the history of musical theatre and his work has had a profound influence on the genre.
