Stephen Schwartz Withdraws From Kennedy Center 2026 Program Amid Political Controversy

Composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz has withdrawn from a planned appearance at the Kennedy Center in 2026, becoming the latest high profile artist to distance himself from the venue amid ongoing controversy surrounding its leadership and governance.

Schwartz had been associated with a Washington National Opera gala scheduled for 16 May 2026, an event that was promoted as a celebration of the connections between musical theatre and opera, with Schwartz listed as curator and host. However, the composer has now confirmed he will not take part, citing concerns that the institution no longer aligns with its original mission as a politically neutral space for artistic expression.

The decision follows significant changes at the Kennedy Center after a board installed during the Trump administration voted to add the former president’s name to the institution, despite the venue being a national monument named after John F Kennedy. The move prompted backlash across the arts community, with multiple performers and groups subsequently canceling scheduled appearances.

In statements provided to US media via his representatives, Schwartz indicated that while he was initially invited to participate in the 2026 program, communication regarding the event ceased in early 2025. He assumed the appearance was no longer proceeding and stated that even if it were to go ahead, he would not participate on principle under the current circumstances.

The Kennedy Center, now branding itself as the Trump Kennedy Center, responded by disputing claims that Schwartz had been formally booked. A spokesperson said Schwartz was never contracted under the current leadership and that his involvement had not been confirmed. Despite this, his name and image remained on the venue’s website and ticketing pages for a period after the public dispute emerged, before being removed later the same day.

Schwartz’s withdrawal carries particular symbolic weight. He co wrote Mass with Leonard Bernstein, the work that opened the Kennedy Center in 1971, linking his career closely to the institution’s origins. His departure leaves few major celebrity names on the center’s 2026 calendar, which is now largely dominated by orchestral programming, touring musicals, and children’s events.

The composer’s decision comes at a time when he is enjoying renewed prominence. He has been shortlisted for an Academy Award for best original song for two new numbers written for Wicked: For Good, the upcoming continuation of the Wicked film adaptation. Those songs, which explore ideas of belonging, resistance, and responsibility, have been widely discussed for their resonance with contemporary social and political anxieties.

As more artists reassess their relationship with the Kennedy Center, Schwartz’s withdrawal underscores a growing divide between major figures in the performing arts and one of America’s most prominent cultural institutions, raising broader questions about artistic independence, governance, and the role of national venues in politically charged times.
