Some Like It Hot Clinches Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album at 66th Annual Ceremony

In a stunning recognition of theatrical brilliance, ‘Some Like It Hot,’ the musical marvel inspired by Billy Wilder’s iconic 1959 film, secured the prestigious Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. This distinguished accolade was bestowed during the star-studded 66th Annual Grammy Awards, held on February 4 at the illustrious Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

The musical, a riveting spectacle directed and choreographed by the acclaimed Casey Nicholaw, captivated audiences during its run at the Shubert Theatre, spanning from November 1, 2022, to December 30, 2023. With a compelling narrative crafted by Matthew López and Amber Ruffin, and the musical genius of Marc Shaiman’s compositions paired with Scott Wittman and Shaiman’s evocative lyrics, ‘Some Like It Hot’ emerged as a tour de force in the realm of musical theater.

The Grammy triumph not only celebrates the remarkable talents of Shaiman and Wittman but also honors the exemplary vocal performances of the musical’s leading luminaries: Christian Borle, J. Harrison Ghee, Adrianna Hicks, and NaTasha Yvette Williams. The award also acknowledges the exceptional contributions of album producers Mary-Mitchell Campbell, Bryan Carter, Scott M. Riesett, Charlie Rosen, and Shaiman. Notably, this marks a repeat victory for Shaiman and Wittman, who previously clinched the same award in 2003 for their work on the musical ‘Hairspray.’

Adding to its repertoire of accolades, ‘Some Like It Hot’ received 13 nominations at the 2023 Tony Awards, securing four esteemed trophies. The awards included Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical (J. Harrison Ghee), Best Choreography (Casey Nicholaw), Best Costume Design of a Musical (Gregg Barnes), and Best Orchestrations (Charlie Rosen and Bryan Carter), further cementing the musical’s legacy in the annals of Broadway history.
