Shirley MacLaine sends video greeting for Southampton SWEET CHARITY screening

A recorded video greeting from Shirley MacLaine has put the Broadway-to-screen history of SWEET CHARITY back in focus ahead of a one-night showing at Southampton Playhouse in Southampton, New York. The cinema will present Bob Fosse‘s 1969 film at 7.00pm on Tuesday, 25 August 2026, followed by a discussion with Shelby Coleman, widow of the musical’s composer, Cy Coleman.

According to The Daily Beast, Southampton Playhouse posted the short video on 17 August and identified MacLaine as 92. The message is a remote contribution, not notice of a live or in-person appearance. The official event page names Shelby Coleman for the post-screening Q&A and does not list MacLaine as an attendee. The star has sent a greeting to the audience; the advertised guest will take part after the film.

Reporting on the content of the greeting, Pulptastic said MacLaine expressed regret that she could not be present and recalled how hard the company had worked. She also made a self-deprecating joke that the film had not done especially well when it was originally released. The remark is MacLaine‘s own recollection; the available event material does not supply box-office figures or establish the film’s commercial result. Her contribution is best understood as a personal reflection on the production and its reception.
