Sean Hayes To Star In New One Man Thriller The Unknown Off Broadway In 2026

Tony nominated actor Sean Hayes will return to the New York stage early next year in The Unknown, a new one person play by award winning writer David Cale, set to premiere Off Broadway at Studio Seaview.

Previews are scheduled to begin on 31 January 2026, with an official opening night on 12 February 2026. The limited engagement is slated to run for ten weeks through 12 April 2026. Tickets are already on sale.

Set in a remote cabin, The Unknown follows Elliott, a writer who escapes the city in the hope of breaking through a bad case of writer’s block. Once there, he begins to sense that he may not be alone, and the line between his creative work and his own reality starts to blur. The piece is billed as a psychological thriller, as Elliott’s isolation forces him to question what is real and what might be a product of his imagination.

The play marks the latest collaboration between Cale and director Leigh Silverman. Silverman has described Cale as a consummate storyteller and has framed The Unknown as an opportunity to build on their previous work together, this time with Hayes at the centre of the creative team. She has also highlighted the contributions of an imaginative design team and a group of producers intent on realising the play’s eerie, intimate atmosphere in Studio Seaview’s space.

Although Hayes is best known to television audiences for his award winning turn as Jack McFarland on the long running NBC comedy Will and Grace, he brings significant stage experience to the project. He made his Broadway debut in 2010 in the revival of Promises, Promises, playing Chuck Baxter, a performance that earned him a Tony Award nomination for Best Leading Actor in a Musical. He later returned to Broadway in 2016 in the comedy An Act of God.

Outside the theatre, Hayes has continued to expand his profile. He co hosts the hit comedy podcast SmartLess and appears in the comedy drama film Is This Thing On, directed by Bradley Cooper.

With The Unknown, Hayes adds a new challenge to an already busy schedule, taking on a solo performance that will place him alone on stage for the duration of the evening. If the combination of Cale’s writing, Silverman’s direction and Hayes’s comic and dramatic range delivers on its promise, Studio Seaview looks set to host one of the more talked about Off Broadway events of the 2026 season.
