Rupert Grint to play Ron Weasley in 17-week Broadway engagement

Rupert Grint will make his first appearance in the stage production as adult Ron Weasley when he joins Broadway’s HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD for a 17-week engagement at New York’s Lyric Theatre. His run is scheduled from 2 February to 30 May 2027. The casting takes Grint back to the character he played on screen and gives him his first Broadway role since 2014.

The official Harry Potter editorial site announced the engagement on 26 August 2026. Grint portrayed Ron in all eight original HARRY POTTER films, released between 2001 and 2011, but he has never previously played the role in HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD. He is returning to a screen character rather than re-entering a stage role, encountering Ron at the later point in life written for the play.

In comments issued with the announcement, Grint described the opportunity as a full-circle experience because he and the adult Ron are now fathers. He also expressed his enthusiasm about returning to Broadway after more than a decade. The engagement therefore combines a familiar character with a new theatrical assignment, rather than recreating one of his earlier film performances on stage.

Ticket access is due to open in stages. People who join the official ticket-access list by 5.59 pm Eastern Time on 31 August 2026 are scheduled to receive access to a presale beginning at 11 am Eastern Time on 1 September. General sales are scheduled to begin at 11 am Eastern Time on 2 September. The announcement did not provide official prices or detailed availability for performances during Grint’s engagement.

Daniel Fredrick is currently listed as Ron in the Broadway company. The casting announcement does not specify whether Fredrick will continue until Grint begins, whether another handover arrangement will apply or whether he will return after the limited engagement. The full company that will appear with Grint in February 2027 was not announced at the same time.

The dates also rule out a currently scheduled onstage reunion between Grint and Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy in the films. Felton is scheduled to remain with the Broadway production until 3 January 2027, while Grint begins on 2 February. No overlap has been announced. Felton was the first performer from the original film cast to carry his screen role into a HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD stage production. Grint now follows that precedent as Ron, although no further original film performers have been announced for his engagement.

Broadway.com’s report on the casting places the engagement within Grint’s existing theatre career. He appeared in Jez Butterworth’s MOJO in the West End before making his Broadway debut in Terrence McNally’s IT’S ONLY A PLAY in 2014. HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD will be his first Broadway credit since that production, as well as his first stage performance as Ron.

The play is set 19 years after HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS and shifts much of its focus to the next generation. Its principal younger characters include Harry Potter’s son Albus and Draco Malfoy’s son Scorpius. Ron appears as an adult and a parent within that later chapter, giving Grint a version of the character at a different stage of life from the one he portrayed across the films.

HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD is a play by Jack Thorne, based on an original story by J.K. Rowling, Thorne and director John Tiffany. The current Broadway staging is presented in one part at the Lyric Theatre, with official production information listing a running time of approximately two hours and 55 minutes, including an interval. The original Broadway production opened in 2018 and won six Tony Awards, including Best Play.

The production also has a substantial history for Australian audiences. AussieTheatre’s previous coverage records Melbourne as the first city outside London and New York to stage HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD. The former Melbourne production moved to a one-part format in 2022, a change also reflected in the current Broadway staging. Grint’s casting, however, applies only to New York. No Australian production, tour, return season or Australian appearance by the actor is attached to the announcement.

Several details remain open beyond the initial casting and sales timetable. No extension has been announced beyond 30 May 2027, and no schedule of absences or alternate-performance arrangements for Grint has been published. The announcement also does not establish who will play Ron after his final scheduled performance. For now, 30 May remains the endpoint of Grint’s engagement, while the complete February company and the production’s longer-term Ron casting remain unconfirmed.
