Rosie O’Donnell joins INDIGO producing team as musical targets London in 2027

Rosie O’Donnell has joined the producing team of INDIGO as the new musical pursues a London premiere in 2027. Her appointment was announced on 27 August 2026 by Lorenzo Thione, Joey Monda and Jay Kuo of Sing Out, Louise! Productions, which is leading and developing the show. Its official production page places INDIGO on a West End trajectory, but no theatre, performance dates, cast or ticketing details accompanied the announcement.

WhatsOnStage reported that O’Donnell became involved after seeing INDIGO during its UK premiere at Curve, Leicester, in summer 2025. She subsequently praised its depiction of an autistic young person. Her move from audience member to producer gives the new announcement a direct connection to the staging that established the musical’s UK presence.

INDIGO follows three generations of women confronting family rupture, memory, addiction and autism. Its central character, Emma, is a non-speaking neurodivergent teenager whose internal experience is represented through colour and light. That visual language places her sensory perspective at the centre of the wider family story, connecting her life with the histories and tensions of the women around her. Colour and light give theatrical form to an experience that Emma does not communicate through speech.

Official creative material records an earlier production at Human Race Theatre Company in the United States before INDIGO reached Curve. The Leicester season was its first UK staging and the production O’Donnell attended. The project is now being planned for London in 2027, continuing a development path from the US to the UK. For now, however, 2027 remains a target rather than a confirmed West End booking.

The musical has a book by Kait Kerrigan and music and lyrics by Scott Evan Davis. Davis conceived it with Kuo and Thione. Catie Davis directed the established development production, with Brad Haak credited for musical supervision and orchestrations. Published production materials also list Andrzej Goulding for scenic and video design, Jake DeGroot for lighting and Matt Peploe for sound. Those credits describe the team attached to the musical’s development to date, not a confirmed creative roster for London. No announcement has established whether the director or designers will continue in 2027.

Sing Out, Louise! Productions remains the lead producer and developer identified in official materials. Its principals announced O’Donnell’s addition, but neither the announcement nor the available production information defined her responsibilities. She can therefore be described only as having joined the producing team. Her formal billing and precise remit have not been disclosed, while the complete producing partnership for London also remains unannounced.

O’Donnell brings relevant Broadway experience as both a performer and producer. Her stage acting credits include GREASE, SEUSSICAL and FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, and she served as lead producer of TABOO. The appointment announcement also connected her new role with her public autism advocacy. That work includes producing the 2025 documentary UNLEASHING HOPE: THE POWER OF SERVICE DOGS FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM. Together, those credits establish the theatre and advocacy background she brings to the team without defining what authority she will hold on INDIGO.

The production’s approach to neurodivergent participation is set out by its producers. They state that INDIGO has been developed with members of autistic and neurodivergent communities. They also say Emma has been played by a neurodivergent actor in every production to date. That statement concerns the performer’s neurodivergence. Emma is the non-speaking character, and the production’s account does not say that the actors who have played her are themselves non-speaking. Detailed information about consultation for a London season and its accessibility arrangements has not yet been announced.

For Australian readers, O’Donnell has a recent performance connection that is separate from INDIGO. She toured her solo show COMMON KNOWLEDGE to Sydney and Melbourne in October 2025. Those appearances do not indicate a future transfer of the musical. No Australian production, tour or licensing plan for INDIGO has been announced.

AussieTheatre previously previewed INDIGO in March 2025, before the Curve season, focusing on its premise, creative team and forthcoming UK premiere. O’Donnell’s appointment and the 2027 London plan are the material developments since that coverage, moving the story beyond the musical’s Leicester debut.

Several practical questions remain before the London plan becomes a confirmed season. Producers have not named a venue or dates, opened ticket sales or announced casting. They have also yet to identify the complete producing partnership, confirm which established creative personnel would transfer, detail London accessibility arrangements or define O’Donnell’s remit. Those announcements will determine the production’s practical shape in 2027.
