Reviews Are In for David Henry Hwang’s Yellow Face on Broadway, Starring Daniel Dae Kim

Roundabout Theatre Company’s Broadway production of Yellow Face by David Henry Hwang has officially opened at the Todd Haimes Theatre, and the buzz is building! Starring Lost and Hawaii Five-0 star Daniel Dae Kim, the show opened on October 1 after beginning previews on September 13. The limited engagement will run through November 24, so there’s still time to catch it.

Directed by Leigh Silverman, Yellow Face is a semi-autobiographical play that mixes real events with fictionalized storytelling. In the show, Hwang’s on-stage counterpart, DHH (played by Kim), leads a protest against yellowface casting in Miss Saigon, only to accidentally cast a white actor as the Asian lead in one of his own plays. It’s a sharp and witty exploration of identity, race, and the complexities of cultural representation in the arts.

Joining Kim in the cast are Kevin Del Aguila as Actor A, Ryan Eggold as Marcus, Francis Jue as HYH, Marinda Anderson as Actor B, Greg Keller as Reporter, and Shannon Tyo as Leah. The cast was assembled by Carrie Gardner and Jilliam Cimini, and they’ve been getting plenty of praise for their performances.

The creative team behind the scenes also brings the story to life, with Arnulfo Maldonado designing the set, Anita Yavich on costumes, Lap Chi Chu on lighting, and sound designers and composers Caroline Eng and Kate Marvin crafting the soundscape. Projection design is handled by Yee Eun Nam, and Charles Means is the production stage manager.

With its blend of humor and heart, Yellow Face has struck a chord with audiences and critics alike. If you’re looking for a thought-provoking night at the theatre, this limited-run show is one to watch!
