Legendary entertainer Liza Minnelli has joined the producing team for Drag: The Musical, which is currently in previews at New World Stages and set to officially open on October 21. This marks Minnelli’s first experience producing a full-length musical, though she has previously produced her own concert performances.
Her involvement brings added prestige to the production, which follows two rival drag bars struggling to stay afloat amidst financial difficulties. The musical, co-written by RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Alaska Thunderfuck, Tomas Costanza, and Ashley Gordon, features an ensemble cast led by Alaska herself, along with fellow Drag Race stars Luxx Noir London, Jan Sport, and Jujubee.
In addition to Minnelli, the producing team includes Scott Prisand, Matt Weaver, Tomas Costanza, and Tristan Schukraft. The musical is directed and choreographed by Spencer Liff and features a creative team that includes scenic designer Jason Sherwood, costume designer Marco Marco, and lighting designer Adam Honore. Sound design is handled by Drew Levy, with wigs by Domino Couture, makeup by Aurora Sexton, and projection design by Aaron Rhyne.
With its blend of humor, heart, and vibrant performances, Drag: The Musical is poised to be one of the standout shows of the fall Off-Broadway season. Minnelli’s involvement further elevates the production, ensuring it will capture the attention of both theatergoers and critics.
