Fans of the legendary musician Prince have reason to celebrate as the new stage musical adaptation of his iconic 1984 film, “Purple Rain,” is slated for a pre-Broadway world premiere in Minneapolis, MN, come spring 2025. This highly anticipated show will light up the stage at the historic State Theatre, managed by Hennepin Theatre Trust, with specifics on production dates and further details expected to be shared soon.
The creative minds behind this project have tapped Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, a two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist known for “Appropriate,” to craft the book. The original screenplay by Albert Magnoli and William Blinn serves as the foundation for Jacobs-Jenkins’ adaptation. Steering the production into its new life is Tony Award nominee Lileana Blain-Cruz, who brings her directorial vision to the project. With Prince’s own music, lyrics, and story driving the narrative, “Purple Rain” will recount the journey of The Kid, a role immortalized by Prince in the film, as he navigates the challenges of the Minneapolis club scene, family turmoil, competitive rivalries, and a blossoming love affair.
The announcement was made with a nod to Prince’s own aspirations for the stage adaptation of his film. L Londell McMillan, Prince’s former manager and attorney, alongside Larry Mestel, Founder & CEO of Primary Wave Music, expressed their enthusiasm for bringing the musical to Prince’s hometown. “Prince talked about adapting ‘Purple Rain’ for the stage for years. It’s only fitting that we launch this world-premiere musical version in the city where it all began,” they stated. The creative team is poised to draw inspiration from Minneapolis’ sound and the indelible mark Prince left on the city, promising a show that resonates with the spirit and legacy of its beloved hometown hero.
