LOS ANGELES - MAR 29: Boy George at the 2015 iHeartRadio Music Awards at the Shrine Auditorium on March 29, 2015 in Los Angeles, CA
Get ready, Broadway fans! The one and only Boy George is hitting the stage in the Tony Award-winning extravaganza, ‘Moulin Rouge!’, starting tonight, February 6. He’s stepping into the shoes of Harold Zidler, taking over from Eric Anderson for a stint that’ll run through May 12. This isn’t just any casting change—it’s Boy George, people!
For those who might need a refresher, Boy George is the iconic English artist who not only dazzled the music world as the lead singer of Culture Club back in the ’80s but also made waves with his unique fashion sense and unforgettable anthems like “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me” and “Karma Chameleon.” And yes, his eye makeup and hat game are still as strong as ever.
But Boy George isn’t new to the Broadway scene. Remember ‘Taboo’? That was the musical about his life where he not only starred as Leigh Bowery but also had a hand in the music and lyrics. It landed him a Tony nom for Best Original Score back in 2003. Plus, he’s rocked the role of Captain Hook in the U.K.’s ‘Peter Pan: The Arena Spectacular.’ So, yeah, he knows his way around a stage.
Joining him in ‘Moulin Rouge!’ are Courtney Reed as the sparkling diamond, Satine, and Derek Klena, who’s back as the dreamy Christian, starting the same night as George. The lineup also includes André Ward as Toulouse-Lautrec, David Harris as the dashing Duke of Monroth, and Sophie Carmen-Jones as Nini. Directed by Alex Timbers and choreographed by Sonya Tayeh, the show is a wild ride through a mash-up of pop hits spanning decades, all set in the heart of the famous Parisian nightclub.
So, if you’re in for a night of dazzling performances and Boy George swinging from the chandelier (figuratively speaking, of course), ‘Moulin Rouge!’ is where it’s at. It’s bold, it’s glamorous, and with Boy George in the mix, it’s guaranteed to be an unforgettable Broadway experience.
