Prince estate outlines leaner Broadway reworking of PURPLE RAIN

Prince estate co-manager L. Londell McMillan has given the clearest account yet of how PURPLE RAIN is being reworked for Broadway, setting out a shorter production with more live musicality and less added narrative material. His comments supply the artistic rationale behind a redevelopment already under way for the Majestic Theatre, where previews are scheduled to begin in March 2027.

In a Rolling Stone interview dated 29 August 2026, McMillan said the revised production would move away from added or adaptive stories that were not part of the established PURPLE RAIN narrative. The new emphasis, as he described it, will be on Prince’s music and the film’s story rather than extra narrative strands. Those priorities are the material new detail. AussieTheatre had previously reported the Broadway booking, dates and creative-team changes, but not McMillan’s stated reasons for reshaping the show.

That shift does not recast PURPLE RAIN as a Prince biopic. The stage musical remains an adaptation of the fictional PURPLE RAIN film narrative and its accompanying album. The official production description says it will feature more than 20 Prince songs. McMillan’s comments concern the balance within that adaptation, rather than a change to its source material.

The musical received its world premiere in Minneapolis in 2025, in a developmental engagement used to test and refine the adaptation before Broadway. McMillan characterised the current work as a refinement rather than a complete restart. He credited the earlier creative team and said selected elements of the Minneapolis version would remain, so the Broadway staging will combine retained work with its newly stated priorities.

The most visible change is in the leadership. Saheem Ali is directing the Broadway production, replacing Minneapolis director Lileana Blain-Cruz, while Peter Duchan has taken over book-writing duties from Branden Jacobs-Jenkins. The production has not set out how Duchan’s book differs structurally from the Minneapolis version, leaving the extent of the narrative reworking beyond McMillan’s broad priorities undisclosed.

There is substantial continuity elsewhere. Choreographer Ebony Williams remains attached, along with music supervisor, arranger and orchestrator Jason Michael Webb. Prince collaborators Bobby Z and Morris Hayes are serving as music advisers. Their involvement gives the production direct experience of Prince’s music as it pursues the greater live musicality described by McMillan. Together, the continuing artists and advisers preserve part of the production’s musical and choreographic framework while its direction and book change hands.

What greater live musicality will mean in practice is still undisclosed. No revised running time, orchestra size, onstage band configuration or song-by-song changes had been announced by 30 August. Nor has the production identified which Minneapolis scenes or narrative elements will be retained, removed or added. For now, McMillan’s comments establish a creative direction rather than a final account of the Broadway version’s stage mechanics.

The interview also clarifies the public timeline around Lin-Manuel Miranda and his father, Luis A. Miranda Jr., although it leaves their exact earlier roles unresolved. McMillan said both had already been involved during the Minneapolis phase, before their participation became widely known. Their producing involvement was publicly reported later, including by AussieTheatre in August, while the main creative-team text in the official July Broadway announcement did not identify them. The production has not explained whether the Minneapolis contribution was formal producing work, informal development participation or another arrangement, so no precise formal timeline can yet be established.

Elsewhere in the interview, McMillan compared the Prince estate’s approach to managing an artist’s legacy with that of the Michael Jackson estate, while stressing that the estates and their business approaches differ. The comparison offers limited context for the estate’s thinking about commercial projects. It should not be read as evidence that another estate’s work supplied a direct creative template for PURPLE RAIN.

The Broadway production will begin previews at the Majestic Theatre on Friday, 12 March 2027, before opening on Monday, 12 April 2027. Tickets are scheduled to go on sale through Telecharge in September 2026, although no exact date had been announced by 30 August. Broadway casting also remained unannounced at that point, and no performer from the Minneapolis company has been confirmed to transfer. The Broadway company remains the next substantial element of the production to be revealed.
