Olly Alexander Set to Star in West End Revival of Oscar Wilde’s Classic ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’

British performer Olly Alexander is stepping back onto the West End stage, leading the anticipated transfer of the National Theatre’s acclaimed production of Oscar Wilde’s comedy classic The Importance of Being Earnest. The production, which previously sold out its run at the National Theatre’s Lyttelton Theatre, is now set to open at the Noël Coward Theatre for a limited engagement from 18 September 2025 to 10 January 2026.

Alexander, best known as the charismatic frontman of synth-pop band Years & Years and for his acclaimed role in Channel 4’s groundbreaking drama It’s a Sin, will portray the mischievous and witty Algernon Moncrieff. The role was previously played at the National Theatre by Doctor Who’s Ncuti Gatwa. Alexander’s return to theatre marks his latest stage appearance since notable performances in Peter and Alice in London’s West End and The Aliens at the Bush Theatre.

Wilde’s beloved 1895 play follows Jack Worthing and his friend Algernon as they each maintain elaborate double identities, only to become entangled in their own schemes when romance and deception collide. Renowned for its sharp wit and satirical commentary on Victorian society, the play remains as relevant today as it was in Wilde’s era, particularly resonating with contemporary audiences through its exploration of identity, social hypocrisy, and the complexity of love.

Director Max Webster, acclaimed for recent hits such as Macbeth at the Donmar Warehouse and West End, and the Broadway adaptation of Life of Pi, has assembled a celebrated creative team to bring Wilde’s comedic masterpiece to life. Rae Smith leads set and costume design, Jon Clark handles lighting, Nicola T. Chang oversees sound, Carrie-Anne Ingrouille serves as movement director, and DJ Walde composes original music for the show.

The West End transfer is produced collaboratively by the National Theatre and Sonia Friedman Productions, building on the overwhelming success of the original run, which captivated audiences and critics alike. Originally staged from November 2024 to January 2025, the production also enjoyed international visibility through broadcasts in cinemas as part of National Theatre Live.

The return of this critically praised revival to London’s West End is set to become one of the autumn’s must-see theatrical events, spotlighting Oscar Wilde’s timeless humour and societal insight, while offering Olly Alexander another platform to showcase his versatility as a celebrated artist.
