Off-Broadway Debut for A Sign of the Times: A Nostalgic Musical Journey to the 1960s

‘A Sign of the Times’, an exciting new musical that encapsulates the essence of the 1960s, is set to make its off-Broadway debut at New World Stages. With previews commencing on February 7, 2024, and an official opening slated for February 22, the musical promises to be a vibrant portrayal of one of history’s most dynamic decades. Directed by Gabriel Barre, the musical is based on a book by Lindsey Hope Pearlman, which in turn is inspired by an original story by Richard J. Robin.

Set in the summer of 1965, a period marked by significant societal shifts, the musical revolves around the journey of an ambitious young woman in New York City. This era, known for the Vietnam War and the burgeoning movements for civil rights and women’s liberation, provides a rich backdrop for the narrative.

The show’s soundtrack is a homage to the era’s iconic pop hits, featuring classics by renowned artists. Highlights include multiple tracks by Petula Clark, such as the titular “A Sign of the Times”, “Downtown”, and “Don’t Sleep in the Subway”. The musical selection is further enriched with renditions of the Spencer Davis Group’s “Gimme Some Lovin’”, Fontella Bass’s “Rescue Me”, Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots are Made for Walking”, Elvis Presley’s “If I Can Dream”, and the Monkees’ “Last Train to Clarksville”.
