Nicole Scherzinger to Star in Broadway Revival of ‘Sunset Boulevard’ This Fall

In a significant development for Broadway, the London revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical ‘Sunset Boulevard,’ featuring Nicole Scherzinger, is set to make its debut on Broadway later this year. An official spokesman for the production confirmed the news on Thursday, heralding a new chapter for the acclaimed musical.

Nicole Scherzinger, renowned for her role in the Pussycat Dolls, will lead the cast in this much-anticipated production. She will be joined by her accomplished co-stars from the West End: Tom Francis as Joe Gillis, Grace Hodgett-Young as Betty Schaefer, and David Thaxton as Max, the enigmatic butler.

While the announcement did not specify the venue or the start date for the Broadway run, informed sources have indicated that the show is scheduled to open in November at the St. James Theater on 44th Street.

The revival, directed by Jamie Lloyd, has received critical acclaim. It has been described as a riveting and deeply impactful rendition of the classic, earning a four-star review for its artistic execution. Nicole Scherzinger’s performance, in particular, has been lauded as a standout, captivating audiences with her portrayal.

This Broadway run comes at a pivotal time for Lloyd Webber, following the closure of ‘Phantom of the Opera’ after an impressive 35-year run and the less successful stint of ‘Bad Cinderella.’

The production’s delay in reaching New York has been a topic of speculation, particularly when compared to other Broadway hits like ‘Rent’ and ‘Hamilton,’ which swiftly transitioned from off-Broadway to Broadway in response to high demand. Sources suggest that internal disagreements and scheduling conflicts have contributed to this delay.

The Shubert Organization had initially offered a spring slot at the Barrymore Theatre, which was declined by director Jamie Lloyd. This decision has sparked discussions about the strategic planning behind the production’s Broadway debut.

Adding to the complexity is the involvement of the Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG), a major player in this production. ATG, which owns several prominent Broadway venues, including the St. James Theatre, reportedly preferred to delay the show to avoid competition with its other major project, a revival of ‘Cabaret.’

Amidst these strategic decisions, Nicole Scherzinger’s performance remains a highly anticipated aspect of the production. However, the postponement to the next season could mean stiffer competition for accolades, especially with Audra McDonald rumored to star in a revival of ‘Gypsy’ during the 2024-25 season.

This Broadway revival of ‘Sunset Boulevard’ is poised to be a significant event, showcasing top-tier talent and marking a new phase in the musical’s storied history.
