MOULIN ROUGE! THE MUSICAL closes Broadway run with US$2.34 million week

MOULIN ROUGE! THE MUSICAL ended its Broadway engagement at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on 30 August 2026 as the week’s highest-grossing production. Its final eight performances generated US$2,336,973, closing the weekly box-office record for the production as official completed performance and audience totals became available.

Broadway League data records 10,458 attendances for the week ending 30 August, with the production playing to a reported 101 per cent of capacity. The gross was US$140,768 above the preceding week’s US$2,196,205, an increase of approximately 6.4 per cent. Dividing the gross by attendance produces an implied average of about US$223.46 per attendee.

The result placed MOULIN ROUGE! THE MUSICAL ahead of every other Broadway production in the reporting period. HAMILTON ranked second at US$2,006,023, so the two musicals were the only shows to pass US$2 million during the week.

Across Broadway, the 26 productions then playing collectively grossed US$25,753,182 from 223,867 attendances. The League’s comparison with the preceding week shows gross rising from US$24,840,816, an increase of approximately 3.7 per cent, and attendance climbing from 219,152, or about 2.2 per cent. The closing show’s 6.4 per cent increase therefore exceeded the market’s aggregate gross growth. These primary figures also contradict the week-on-week direction stated in a syndicated Deadline report, which described both measures as falling.

Broadway Direct’s published casting schedule separates Aaron Tveit‘s limited return from the announced closing-night casting. Tveit’s 15-performance engagement as Christian ran from 18 to 29 August, ending the day before the final performance. Christian Douglas was announced to return as Christian for 30 August. Tveit was therefore part of the closing-week story, but Douglas, rather than Tveit, was the announced Christian for the last performance.

The production’s official website lists the completed Broadway run as 2,297 regular performances and 24 previews. Almost three million audience members saw the musical, which involved more than 400 company members across its Broadway life. Those cumulative figures are the key new development beyond AussieTheatre’s 26 August report on the preceding US$2.2 million week, when final performance and audience totals were not yet available.

The Broadway chapter followed a Boston premiere. Previews began at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on 28 June 2019, and the production opened on 25 July. Performances were suspended during the COVID-19 shutdown before resuming on 24 September 2021. The 2026 closing date consequently ends a Broadway timeline spanning more than seven years, including the lengthy period when the theatre was dark.

MOULIN ROUGE! THE MUSICAL won ten Tony Awards in 2021, including Best Musical and Best Actor in a Musical for Aaron Tveit. The official Broadway website also states that the production recouped its investment in late 2022. Neither that statement nor the closing-week result establishes a cumulative Broadway gross, final profit or overall return to investors.

Claims about the closing gross’s place in the production’s weekly history remain unresolved. The syndicated Deadline report describes it as the second-highest result, while a Playbill summary indexed by BroadwayStars calls it the third-highest. Without a reconciled complete weekly history, the confirmed conclusion is narrower: MOULIN ROUGE! THE MUSICAL recorded Broadway’s highest gross for the week ending 30 August.

Global Creatures mounted the Broadway production, providing a direct Australian connection to the completed New York run. The next confirmed Australian milestone is a separate new production scheduled to begin at Sydney Lyric in March 2027. That engagement is not being presented as a transfer of the Broadway company that has now concluded its run.
