Audiences heading to the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall from April 22-27 can expect a whirlwind of jaw-dropping visual effects when the Broadway musical Beetlejuice takes the stage. The show’s illusion creator, Michael Weber, has crafted an array of surprises designed to enhance the wildly popular story inspired by Tim Burton’s iconic 1988 film.
With a background that includes illusion work in major theater and film productions such as Ocean’s 13, The Illusionist, and Forrest Gump, Weber brings a wealth of experience to Beetlejuice. His role involves designing seamless onstage illusions that meld with the show’s narrative, ensuring that each magical moment feels natural to the plot rather than like a separate showcase of trickery.
Weber joined the Beetlejuice creative team from the ground up, collaborating with director Alex Timbers, scenic designer David Korins, costume designer William Ivey Long, and puppet designer Michael Curry. Together, they mapped out the most effective ways to visually represent key story points, including the transformation of characters into ghosts and the haunting atmosphere central to the show.
The gothic-inspired house at the center of Beetlejuice has been described as a character in its own right. It evolves whenever new occupants arrive, and Weber’s illusions help demonstrate the house’s—and its inhabitants’—otherworldly capabilities.
While fans of the original film will catch glimpses of favorite references woven into the musical, newcomers can enjoy a story that stands on its own. The illusions range from characters vanishing and reappearing to creative methods of levitation, all serving to highlight the unusual powers possessed by the show’s ghostly residents and the mischievous title character.
Much like lighting, sound, and set design, illusions are an integral part of the overall theatrical experience. Weber’s work required collaboration with cast members, who had to master each illusion to blend seamlessly with the performance. The touring production was crafted to deliver consistent effects in every city, meaning audiences in Sarasota can look forward to the same high-quality spectacle that thrilled Broadway attendees.
Beetlejuice features music and lyrics by Australian composer Eddie Perfect, with a book by Scott Brown and Anthony King. The musical enjoyed a nearly year-long run on Broadway before pandemic-related closures and later returned for another successful engagement. The story follows Lydia Deetz, a teenager grappling with grief and a sense of invisibility, who crosses paths with newly deceased couple Adam and Barbara Maitland—and the mischievous Beetlejuice, a demon sporting a signature striped suit.
For those ready to experience a full-scale Broadway spectacle with an imaginative twist, Beetlejuice promises comedic moments, music-driven storytelling, and a dash of enchanting illusions—all brought to life by a team of acclaimed theater artists and one remarkable designer whose aim is to keep audiences both guessing and fully immersed in the show’s supernatural world.
