Man Arrested for Attempted Murder After Four Pedestrians Hit by Car in London’s West End

A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a car collision that injured four pedestrians in London’s West End early on Christmas Day. One victim remains in a life-threatening condition.

The Metropolitan Police responded to reports of a collision and a car driving on the wrong side of Shaftesbury Avenue in Covent Garden at 12:45 a.m. Wednesday. Officers, in coordination with City of London Police, apprehended the suspect within minutes of the incident.

Police have confirmed the event as isolated and not terror-related. According to investigators, the suspect was involved in an altercation at a nightclub before getting into his vehicle and driving onto the pavement, striking multiple people.

Impact and Investigation

The collision occurred on Shaftesbury Avenue, a bustling area in London’s theatre district, known for its venues, bars, and proximity to Soho. The street remains cordoned off between the Gielgud Theatre, which hosts the musical Oliver!, and the Sondheim Theatre, home to Les Misérables.

Blood and items of clothing, including shoes and a hat, were visible on the pavement in front of Caffe Concerto, where forensic officers collected evidence. Another cordon was established closer to Soho, covering Archer Street and Great Windmill Street, which includes the Windmill Soho nightclub and other venues.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Cundy stated, “Officers responded quickly to this report, working closely with City of London Police to arrest a man within minutes. Detectives are quickly progressing inquiries as part of this investigation.

“It’s believed that the suspect was involved in an altercation at a nightclub prior to getting in his car and mounting the pavement. Several scenes remain in place at the location today. This has been confirmed as an isolated incident which is not terror-related.”

Public Safety and Response

The incident has caused shock in the normally vibrant area, particularly during the holiday season. Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious but reassured that this was an isolated event.

The condition of the other three victims is not immediately known, though all were taken to hospital for treatment. Emergency services continue to work at the scene, and inquiries are ongoing.

Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
