‘Mamma Mia!’ Returns to Broadway for Limited Six-Month Run

Fans of the beloved ABBA musical can rejoice as ‘Mamma Mia!’ makes its triumphant return to Broadway. Producer Judy Craymer announced Tuesday that the hit show will reopen at New York’s Winter Garden Theatre for a special six-month engagement, kicking off on August 2, with an official opening night set for August 14. The run will continue through February 1, 2026.

Craymer, whose vision first brought ‘Mamma Mia!’ to Broadway in 2001, recalled the overwhelming reception that the original production received. ‘When ‘Mamma Mia!’ opened on Broadway in 2001, nothing could have prepared us for the outpouring of love and acclaim—and dancing in the aisles—that greeted us at the magnificent Winter Garden Theatre,’ she said in a statement. The production, which enjoyed a 14-year tenure between the Winter Garden and the Broadhurst Theatre, is set to recapture that magic for a new generation of theatregoers.

In addition to its legendary stage presence, ‘Mamma Mia!’ has left an indelible mark on popular culture. The musical was adapted into the 2008 film starring Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, and Colin Firth, followed by a well-received sequel, ‘Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,’ in 2018. With fans clamoring for a third film, both Streep and co-star Christine Baranski have hinted at the possibility of returning should the right script materialize—a testament to Craymer’s knack for making things happen.

‘This limited engagement is not just a return—it’s a homecoming,’ Craymer noted. ‘We’re thrilled to bring the original production back to Broadway after 24 years, and we can’t wait for audiences to experience the joy and energy of ‘Mamma Mia!’ once again.’

As the musical reclaims its Broadway stage, the excitement around ABBA continues beyond the theatre. In 2021, the iconic band released ‘Voyage,’ their first album in over 40 years, and launched a unique hologram show at London’s Queen Elizabeth Park, further cementing their status as cultural legends.

For theatre enthusiasts and ABBA fans alike, this limited run promises a nostalgic yet fresh celebration of one of Broadway’s most enduring hits. With its infectious tunes and timeless appeal, ‘Mamma Mia!’ is set to sweep audiences off their feet once more.
