LOS ANGELES - NOV 5: Luke Evans at the "Midway" Premiere at the Village Theater on November 5, 2019 in Westwood, CA
Hollywood star Luke Evans is preparing to tick a long held ambition off his list, with the actor confirming he will make his Broadway debut in a revival of the cult musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
The Welsh performer will take on the iconic role of Dr Frank-N-Furter in the upcoming production, a character famously originated by Tim Curry in both the stage show and its celebrated film adaptation.
Speaking ahead of the production, Evans described performing on Broadway as something he has dreamed about for many years.
The 46 year old actor said appearing in The Rocky Horror Picture Show will also bring back memories of a formative moment early in his career. When he was a teenager, Evans chose a song from the musical for an end of year showcase designed to attract the attention of talent agents.
“We had to choose a song from a show that was sort of ‘in your face’, something that would really catch the eye,” Evans said.
He ultimately selected the song “Sweet Transvestite”, one of the show’s most famous numbers and the dramatic introduction of Dr Frank-N-Furter.
“It’s punchy and powerful and epic,” Evans recalled. “That was my first introduction to the musical.”
Originally created by Richard O’Brien, The Rocky Horror Picture Show first premiered in 1973 and quickly developed a passionate global following.
The musical comedy follows an engaged couple whose car breaks down during a storm. Seeking help at a nearby castle, they encounter the eccentric inhabitants of the mansion, including the flamboyant Dr Frank-N-Furter and a host of strange guests.
Over the decades the show has become one of theatre’s most recognisable cult phenomena, particularly through its interactive midnight screenings and audience participation traditions.
Evans said that while he initially only knew the famous song, he later became more familiar with the full show while living in London.
“All over Soho and the West End there used to be theatres where people would come and see the show and participate as they do with the film,” he said. “I’ve seen it many times since. And now I’m playing it for real on Broadway.”
Although this production will mark his Broadway debut, Evans is no stranger to the stage. Earlier in his career he appeared in several West End musicals, including Rent and Miss Saigon.
Since then he has built an international film career, starring in blockbuster productions such as The Hobbit and Beauty and the Beast. Evans has also released two studio albums, highlighting his continued connection to music.
The actor’s Broadway debut comes during what is shaping up to be a busy period in his career, with his new thriller series The Party expected to premiere in 2026.
For Evans, however, stepping onto a Broadway stage in one of musical theatre’s most iconic roles represents something deeply personal, the fulfilment of a dream that began with a teenage audition song nearly three decades ago.
