Lord of the Rings musical returns in semi-immersive production this summer

Exciting news for fans of J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic trilogy, The Lord of the Rings! The acclaimed musical adaptation of the beloved books is set to return in an “epic and intimate immersive” production this summer, promising an unforgettable theatrical experience. Following its successful premiere in Toronto and West End run, the show will be revived at the Watermill Theatre in Newbury, featuring an ensemble cast and large-scale puppets.

With books and lyrics by Shaun McKenna and Matthew Warchus, and music by A.R. Rahman, Finnish folk band Värttinä, and Christopher Nightingale, this production promises to be a true feast for the senses. And, in a unique twist, the audience will follow the story through the venue’s auditorium and garden spaces, immersing themselves in the lush world of the Shire and venturing into the dark depths of the Cracks of Doom.

The Watermill’s director, Paul Hart, promises to deliver an unmissable spectacle, defying expectations with an ambitious staging of The Lord of the Rings in their 200-seat theater. The show will run for 12 weeks, from 25 July to 15 October, with tickets going on sale soon.

Despite recent challenges, including being removed from the Arts Council’s National Portfolio, the Watermill team has not lost its passion for producing outstanding theater. In fact, they are committed to making this production accessible to all, offering 28% of the tickets for just £25. So, don’t miss your chance to witness the impossible and join Frodo and the Fellowship on their epic quest – book your tickets now!
