Lionsgate has announced plans for a new stage adaptation of the iconic 1987 film Dirty Dancing, aiming for a Broadway debut. The studio is collaborating with Eleanor Bergstein, the original screenwriter, to develop the musical. Lonny Price, who portrayed Neil Kellerman in the original film, will direct the production.

This adaptation is set to launch in late 2025, with an initial run in North America before expanding to Asia, Australia, Latin America, and other regions. The musical will feature “fan-favorite” songs from the film, along with new music to enhance the experience.

While Dirty Dancing has been adapted for the stage before—premiering in Sydney in 2004 and later seeing successful runs in London’s West End and other global markets—this new production is positioned as a reimagined version specifically tailored for Broadway. The enduring popularity of Dirty Dancing has seen it adapted into various formats over the years, including a television series, reality competition shows, a television musical adaptation, and an upcoming sequel film.

Lionsgate is producing the show alongside Showpath, the live stage arm of Path Entertainment Group. This project adds to Lionsgate’s growing slate of theatrical productions, which also includes plans for Broadway adaptations of Wonder, Nashville, La La Land, and The Hunger Games in London.

The Dirty Dancing stage adaptation aims to captivate a new generation of theatergoers while paying homage to the beloved film’s legacy.
