Kinky Boots dazzles the West End with a bold, joyful revival led by Johannes Radebe and Matt Cardle

London’s Theatreland has a new frontrunner, as Kinky Boots storms onto the West End in a production that is equal parts spectacle, heart, and high-energy celebration. With a limited 17-week run, the musical has quickly positioned itself as one of the capital’s most talked-about shows, drawing audiences in with its vibrant storytelling and standout performances.

Featuring music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper, Kinky Boots centres on themes of acceptance, identity, and unlikely partnership. The story follows Charlie Price, played by Matt Cardle, who inherits his late father’s struggling shoe factory in Northamptonshire. Facing mounting pressure to keep the business afloat, Charlie’s path takes an unexpected turn when he meets Lola, a charismatic and confident drag performer portrayed by Johannes Radebe. Together, the pair embark on a bold venture to design high-heeled boots for men, culminating in a high-stakes fashion showcase in Milan.

At the heart of the production is Radebe’s commanding performance as Lola. Known widely for his work on Strictly Come Dancing, he brings a magnetic stage presence that blends precision, power, and emotional depth. His portrayal is both electrifying and nuanced, earning rapturous applause and cementing his place as a formidable force in musical theatre.

Opposite him, Cardle delivers a compelling turn as Charlie, anchoring the narrative with strong vocals and a grounded emotional arc. His performance highlights the internal conflict of a man torn between personal ambition and family legacy, adding depth to the show’s uplifting message.

Courtney Bowman also shines as Lauren, injecting humour and charm into the production. Her rendition of “The History of Wrong Guys” is a clear highlight, earning enthusiastic audience response and reinforcing her status as a standout talent within the cast.

Beyond the performances, the production excels in its visual presentation. The set design, while largely consistent throughout the show, uses subtle shifts and creative staging to transport audiences seamlessly between locations. This understated approach allows the story and performances to take centre stage while maintaining a strong sense of place.

The emotional impact of Kinky Boots is undeniable. From its infectious musical numbers to its heartfelt exploration of identity and acceptance, the show strikes a powerful balance between entertainment and message. Audiences are left both uplifted and reflective, with many moments prompting spontaneous applause and visible emotion throughout the theatre.

Enhancing the overall experience, the production has partnered with nearby restaurant Colonel Saab, located just a short walk from the London Coliseum. The collaboration offers theatre-goers a curated four-course dining experience, complete with a bespoke Kinky Boots-inspired cocktail. Priced at £75 per person, the menu showcases modern Indian cuisine, with attentive staff guiding diners through a thoughtfully crafted selection of dishes.

As Kinky Boots continues its West End run, it stands as a shining example of contemporary musical theatre done right. With a stellar cast, a resonant message, and a production that delivers both spectacle and substance, it offers an evening of theatre that is as joyous as it is unforgettable.
