Kandi Burruss Returns to Broadway, Balancing Pre-Show Nerves, Personal Turmoil and a Major New Role in “& Juliet”
Broadway is welcoming back one of its most recognisable multihyphenates as Kandi Burruss prepares to step into the role of Angelique in the hit musical & Juliet. Best known globally for The Real Housewives of Atlanta and long celebrated for her Grammy winning music career, Burruss is returning to the stage at a pivotal moment in both her personal and professional life.
The production marks Burruss’s first onstage Broadway appearance since her 2018 debut as Mama Morton in Chicago. In the years since, she has become increasingly active behind the curtain, serving as a producer on major revivals including The Piano Lesson in 2023 and this year’s Denzel Washington led staging of Othello. Now she is once again stepping into the spotlight as part of the vibrant jukebox musical that reimagines Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet through the pop catalogue of Max Martin.
The timing of her return comes as she navigates a highly publicised transition in her personal life. Burruss, 49, is currently in the midst of a divorce from husband Todd Tucker after 11 years of marriage. She filed in November, citing irreconcilable differences, and has expressed her commitment to co parenting their two children, Ace and Blaze.
Against that backdrop, rehearsing for & Juliet has become a stabilising force. Burruss has embraced the show as a chance to focus on personal growth and the physical and vocal training that accompanies the role. The demanding rehearsal schedule, she says, has become a welcome counterbalance to the noise and stress swirling outside the theatre environment.
As a performer whose career began in the early Nineties as lead singer of R&B group Xscape, Burruss is no stranger to high pressure stages. Her songwriting credentials, including co writing the mega hit “No Scrubs,” place her in rare artistic company. The familiarity of Max Martin’s pop rock catalogue further energises her; the musical features chart toppers such as “Teenage Dream,” “F***in’ Perfect,” and “Oops!… I Did It Again.” Burruss even shares a writing credit with Martin on Ariana Grande’s “Break Up with Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored” through an interpolation of “It Makes Me Ill,” though the two never collaborated directly in the studio.
Despite decades of performance experience, Burruss admits that she still contends with nerves. The scale of Broadway, she says, carries a unique thrill and pressure that even seasoned artists feel. Yet her excitement about joining the & Julietcompany outweighs any jitters, and she is particularly eager for her children and mother to see her perform in the show.
