June Squibb will star in MARJORIE PRIME when Jordan Harrison’s acclaimed play makes its Broadway debut with Second Stage Theater at the Hayes Theater. Previews begin 20 November, with opening night set for 8 December. Anne Kauffman directs, with a principal cast that also includes Cynthia Nixon, Danny Burstein, and Christopher Lowell.
The play centres on an elderly woman who spends her final days in conversation with a hologram of her late husband, while her family help feed memories into the system, resulting in competing versions of their shared past.
Harrison’s drama premiered Off Broadway at Playwrights Horizons in 2015 and was a finalist for the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It was later adapted into a 2017 film starring Jon Hamm, Tim Robbins, Geena Davis, and Lois Smith. This Broadway run marks Harrison’s Main Stem debut.
For June Squibb, MARJORIE PRIME marks a return to Broadway. She last appeared on the Main Stem in 2018, stepping into WAITRESS, and made her Broadway debut in the original 1959 production of GYPSY, playing the stripper Electra opposite Ethel Merman. Recent screen credits include THELMA and INSIDE OUT 2, with ELEANOR THE GREAT to come.
Cynthia Nixon, known on screen for Sex and the City, made her Broadway debut at 14 in THE PHILADELPHIA STORY and has since appeared in more than a dozen Broadway productions, winning Tony Awards for RABBIT HOLE and THE LITTLE FOXES. Recent stage work includes Jordan Seavey’s THE SEVEN YEAR DISAPPEAR.
Danny Burstein joins the cast following his Tony-nominated turn in GYPSY opposite Audra McDonald. He previously won a Tony Award for MOULIN ROUGE! THE MUSICAL as Harold Zidler and has appeared in more than 20 Broadway productions.
Christopher Lowell returns to Second Stage after making his Broadway debut in Leslye Headland’s CULT OF LOVE during the 2024 to 2025 season.
MARJORIE PRIME is part of Second Stage’s 2025 to 2026 season, the first programmed by new artistic director Evan Cabnet. The season will also feature the Broadway debut of Gina Gionfriddo with BECKY SHAW, directed by Trip Cullman, beginning previews 18 March 2026 and opening 8 April 2026.
