Josh Piterman joins the West End cast of Les Misérables

Starting on Monday, March 27th, 2023, Cameron Mackintosh has revealed fresh cast members for the highly-regarded new production of Les Miserables, being showcased at the Sondheim Theatre. The Sondheim Theatre is a West End theatre located on Shaftesbury Avenue in the City of Westminster, London, England. It was previously known as the Queen’s Theatre until it was renamed in 2019 to honor the American composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim.

From the 27th of March 2023, the production will be graced by the addition of Australian musical theatre star Josh Piterman as Jean Valjean, Stewart Clarke portraying Javert, Lucie Jones taking on the role of Fantine, Claire Machin as Madame Thénardier and Harry Chandler playing Enjolras. These performers will be joining the existing cast consisting of Gerard Carey in the role of Thénardier, Robert Tripolino playing Marius, Nathania Ong portraying Eponine, and Lulu-Mae Pears as Cosette.

Josh Piterman is an Australian actor, singer, and songwriter. He has appeared in a number of musical theatre productions in Australia and the UK. Piterman’s notable roles include playing the lead role of Gerry Goffin in the Australian production of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, and his starring role in the Phantom the Phantom of the Opera on the West End and currently in Australia.

Les Misérables is a musical based on the novel of the same name by French author Victor Hugo. The story is set in 19th-century France and follows the struggles and redemption of ex-convict Jean Valjean, who has been imprisoned for 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread. After being released, he breaks his parole and starts a new life, pursued by Inspector Javert, who is determined to bring him to justice.

The musical explores themes of love, justice, redemption, and sacrifice, and features a diverse cast of characters, including the tragic Fantine, the heroic Marius, the revolutionary Enjolras, and the villainous Thénardiers. The show has been widely acclaimed for its powerful score, which includes such memorable songs as “I Dreamed a Dream,” “On My Own,” and “Do You Hear the People Sing?”

Les Misérables has become one of the most successful and popular musicals of all time, having been seen by millions of people around the world since its debut in 1985.
