Jonathan Groff Surprises Keanu Reeves with Playful Mid-Performance Moment at Tony Awards

Jonathan Groff delivered an unforgettable highlight during the 2025 Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Sunday, June 8. Known for his dynamic performances, Groff, who was nominated for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical, ventured boldly into the audience mid-song and playfully straddled actor Keanu Reeves, his former co-star in The Matrix Resurrections.

Groff was performing a lively medley from the new Broadway bio-musical exploring the life and career of legendary singer Bobby Darin, featuring hits such as “Mack the Knife,” “That’s All,” and “Once in a Lifetime.” As he entertained the star-studded crowd, Groff leaped dramatically offstage, placing a leg on either side of Reeves’ seat. Standing on the armrests, Groff continued his performance enthusiastically, while Reeves reacted with playful delight, cheering and flashing rock and roll signs.

This spontaneous interaction delighted fans and became a viral highlight of the night, showcasing the camaraderie between the two actors who previously shared the screen in the fourth Matrix film, where Groff portrayed Agent Smith opposite Reeves’ iconic Neo.

Groff’s nomination and standout performance marked another achievement in his illustrious Broadway career, which includes leading roles in original casts of hits such as Spring Awakening, Hamilton, and the revival of Merrily We Roll Along, the latter earning him his first Tony Award.

Meanwhile, Reeves, who attended the ceremony as a presenter, is preparing for his highly anticipated Broadway debut in Samuel Beckett’s classic play, Waiting for Godot, alongside his Bill & Ted co-star Alex Winter.
