Jennifer Saunders to Lead U.K. Revival of THE SEA
British stage and screen favourite Jennifer Saunders will head the cast of a major new revival of Edward Bond’s acclaimed play THE SEA. The production is set to run at Theatre Royal Bath from 22 October to 7 November 2026.
Saunders, best known for her work in ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS and other iconic British comedies, takes on the role of Mrs Rafi, the self-appointed “First Lady” of a small East Anglian seaside village. This marks her return to the Bath stage following her well-received performance as Madame Arcati in BLITHE SPIRIT.
Written by Edward Bond, THE SEA is a blend of farce, sharp social satire and poignant drama. Set in 1907 at the height of the Edwardian era, the story follows the impact of a violent storm on a close-knit community. As the village reels, the draper Mr Hatch becomes convinced that an invasion from outer space is imminent, while Mrs Rafi busies herself organising the local women for an amateur performance of Orpheus and Eurydice.
The play originally debuted at the Royal Court Theatre in London in 1973, and has since been revived at the National Theatre and at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. This new production is directed by Jonathan Munby, with further casting to be announced.
