James Norton to play Hamlet in new West End production from Thomas Ostermeier

James Norton is set to take on one of theatre’s most celebrated roles, starring as Hamlet in a new West End production directed and conceived by Thomas Ostermeier.

The production is planned for autumn 2027, with the London theatre, performance dates and further casting yet to be announced. It will be produced by Wessex Grove and Gavin Kalin Productions.

The staging will mark a major Shakespearean moment for Norton, who is returning to the stage after his acclaimed performance in A Little Life. While Norton has appeared in Shakespeare related work before, including earlier university productions and a filmed role as Richard II, this production is being billed as his first major Shakespearean stage role.

For Ostermeier, the West End Hamlet will also represent a significant first. The German director, artistic director of Berlin’s Schaubühne, will direct Shakespeare in English for the first time. His earlier German language version of Hamletpremiered in 2008 and has since toured internationally for 18 years.

Ostermeier is known for bold, contemporary approaches to classic texts. London audiences have recently seen his work through high profile productions including The Seagull, starring Cate Blanchett and Tom Burke, and An Enemy of the People, starring Matt Smith.

The announcement brings together one of Britain’s most prominent stage and screen actors with a director recognised for reshaping canonical drama for modern audiences. Norton, whose screen credits include Happy Valley and King & Conqueror, has built a career across television, film and theatre, while Ostermeier’s work has earned international attention for its physical intensity, political edge and direct engagement with audiences.

The choice of Hamlet places Norton in a long line of actors drawn to Shakespeare’s troubled prince, a role that continues to test performers through its emotional scale, philosophical complexity and cultural weight. The play’s themes of grief, revenge, moral hesitation and political corruption have made it one of Shakespeare’s most frequently revived works.

Although details of the new staging remain under wraps, Ostermeier’s involvement suggests the production is likely to be more than a conventional revival. His previous Hamlet was known for its radical staging and ensemble approach, with a small cast taking on multiple roles.

The West End production will arrive at a time when star led Shakespeare revivals continue to draw major attention from theatre audiences. With Norton in the title role and Ostermeier making his English language Shakespeare debut, the 2027 Hamlet is already shaping up as one of the most anticipated London stage events of the year.
