Jamaal Fields-Green Takes the Spotlight as Michael Jackson on London’s West End

Jamaal Fields-Green became the new face of MJ the Musical at the Prince Edward Theatre this week, completing a rare theatrical hat-trick by leading the show on Broadway, on its U.S. national tour and now in London. He officially assumes the role on 14 January 2025, succeeding Tony winner Myles Frost and becoming the first performer to front all three major stagings of the production.

The West End company opened in March 2024 and continues its run to packed houses in Soho, offering the same behind-the-scenes dramatization of Jackson’s 1992 Dangerous tour rehearsals that fuelled the musical’s New York success.

From Broadway Juggernaut to Global Franchise

Since its 2021 Broadway premiere, MJ has become one of the decade’s most profitable new titles. The show earned 10 Tony nominations and four wins in 2022, including Best Actor, Lighting, Sound and Choreography, and has reportedly generated more than US $245 million in ticket sales across its various productions.

Fields-Green’s Road to “Billie Jean”

A Bronx native and graduate of the University of Hartford’s Hartt School, Fields-Green first drew industry attention when he joined the Chicago company of Hamilton as John Laurens and Philip Hamilton straight out of college. After pandemic shutdowns stalled his early momentum, he was tapped as an alternate on the MJ tour, eventually covering six performances a week, before stepping up as principal in all three territories.

Carrying the Legacy

Directed and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon with a book by two-time Pulitzer winner Lynn Nottage, MJ threads more than 25 hits “Smooth Criminal,” “Beat It,” “Thriller” and others through a frame that also touches on the pop star’s creative pressures and family dynamics. Recent commentary has questioned how fully the musical engages with the controversies that shadowed Jackson’s later life, yet box-office momentum shows little sign of slowing.

For Fields-Green, the role demands six high-octane performances each week, months of style-specific dance training and a forensic study of Jackson’s speech patterns and stagecraft. Industry watchers will be looking to see how his interpretation evolves as London audiences, renowned for their reserved theatre etiquette, acclimate to a new King of Pop leading one of the West End’s hottest tickets.
