Imelda Staunton and Bessie Carter Shine in MRS WARREN’S PROFESSION West End Revival

Imelda Staunton

The West End is gearing up for a theatrical treat as Imelda Staunton and Bessie Carter come together for the first time on stage in a new revival of MRS WARREN’S PROFESSION. This production of George Bernard Shaw’s classic is set to captivate audiences with its timeless exploration of societal hypocrisies and the enduring fight for women’s autonomy. Directed by the acclaimed Dominic Cooke, this revival promises to breathe fresh life into one of Shaw’s most provocative works.

First penned in 1893, MRS WARREN’S PROFESSION faced a 30-year ban by Lord Chamberlain due to its unflinching critique of the English class system and societal double standards. The play boldly confronts issues of morality, capitalism, and the sacrifices women make to survive in a patriarchal world. Over a century later, its themes remain strikingly relevant, offering a mirror to contemporary struggles for gender equality and social justice. Shaw’s incisive wit and keen observations continue to resonate, making this revival a timely addition to the West End lineup.

The heart of this production lies in its unique casting. Imelda Staunton, a four-time Olivier Award winner, takes on the role of Mrs Kitty Warren, a fiercely independent woman with a complex past. Joining her is her daughter, Bessie Carter, stepping into the shoes of Vivie Warren, a modern woman grappling with the revelations of her mother’s life choices.

Reflecting on this collaboration, Staunton shared;

The new year felt like the perfect time to return to the stage in MRS WARREN’S PROFESSION, a play which asks ever pertinent questions about the role of women in society, and the choices they make for survival. I couldn’t be happier to be stepping into the rehearsal room with my very great friend and colleague Dominic; and my brilliant daughter Bessie. What a treat for 2025!

This partnership adds a rich layer of authenticity to the dynamic between Mrs Warren and Vivie, promising performances brimming with emotional depth and nuance.

A director of remarkable vision, Dominic Cooke is no stranger to tackling challenging works. His previous collaborations with Staunton on HELLO, DOLLY! and FOLLIES showcased his ability to bring fresh perspectives to classic material. For Cooke, this revival is an opportunity to highlight the enduring relevance of Shaw’s critique. He remarked,

Although MRS WARREN’S PROFESSION is over 120 years old, it still has the power to shock with its frank and provocative examination of the exploitative nature of society and the double standards applied to women.

The production also marks a reunion between Cooke and producer Sonia Friedman, who previously collaborated on CLYBOURNE PARK. Their combined expertise promises a staging that is both innovative and faithful to Shaw’s intent.

The revival’s creative team includes Chloe Lamford on design and Amy Ball overseeing casting. Together, they aim to create a production that is visually compelling and emotionally resonant. The play will open at the Garrick Theatre on 22 May, with previews beginning on 10 May, and will run until 16 August 2025. Tickets will be available soon, so theatre enthusiasts should mark their calendars.

At its core, MRS WARREN’S PROFESSION challenges audiences to confront uncomfortable truths about societal structures and individual choices. In an era still grappling with gender inequality and systemic injustices, Shaw’s work serves as both a historical artifact and a call to action. This production, with its stellar cast and visionary direction, underscores the power of theatre to provoke thought and inspire change.

The upcoming revival of MRS WARREN’S PROFESSION is a testament to the enduring relevance of George Bernard Shaw’s work. With Imelda Staunton and Bessie Carter at the helm, under the expert direction of Dominic Cooke, this production promises to be a highlight of the 2025 theatrical calendar. Don’t miss the chance to witness this extraordinary mother-daughter pairing bring Shaw’s provocative masterpiece to life. Book your tickets soon and prepare for an unforgettable experience at the Garrick Theatre.
