Heath Ledger Movie ‘A Knight’s Tale’ Gets Musical Theater Adaptation, Sets U.K. Debut

The beloved 2001 film ‘A Knight’s Tale,’ starring Heath Ledger, is set to make its musical theater debut in Manchester, U.K. next year. This adaptation brings a fresh take to the story that has captured audiences for over two decades.

‘A Knight’s Tale’ features Heath Ledger as a peasant who disguises himself as a nobleman to compete in jousting tournaments, alongside Paul Bettany and Rufus Sewell. The film, written and directed by Brian Helgeland and produced by Columbia Pictures, follows Ledger’s character as he battles the fierce Count Adhemar (Sewell) for jousting supremacy.

Brian Helgeland recently disclosed that he had considered a film sequel focusing on the teenage daughter of Ledger’s character, with Sony and Netflix showing initial interest before ultimately declining. Now, the story finds new life on stage, adapted by Runaway Entertainment, known for ‘101 Dalmatians the Musical.’

The musical adaptation, penned by Brona C Titley and directed by Rachel Kavanaugh, will open on April 11, 2025, for a limited run. Matt Cole will handle choreography, with Lucy Casson serving as the casting director and Keston and Keston managing children’s casting. The cast has yet to be announced.

‘Over twenty years ago, I had the time of my life surrounded by a supreme cast and crew making a film we all fell in love with while we were joyfully making it,’ Helgeland reflected. ‘Sitting at a recent read-through of the stage version, fashioned by Rachel Kavanaugh and Brona C Titley, I could feel that same joy and love emerging. I am grateful for the new life they are creating and very eager to see it in all its fully staged glory.’

‘A Knight’s Tale The Musical’ is produced by Tristan Baker and Charlie Parsons for Runaway Entertainment and Isobel David, in collaboration with Sony Pictures and Brian Helgeland. This adaptation joins a growing list of movies being transformed for the stage, such as ’13 Going on 30 The Musical’ and ‘Burlesque The Musical.’

Fans of the original film and newcomers alike can look forward to experiencing the excitement and romance of ‘A Knight’s Tale’ in a whole new format next year.
