HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD celebrates 10 years of West End magic

HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD has celebrated its 10th anniversary at London’s Palace Theatre, marking a decade since the ambitious stage production first opened in the West End on 30 July 2016.

Produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, Colin Callender and Harry Potter Theatrical Productions, the show has become the longest-running play in modern West End history to be presented as a two-part theatrical experience. It has remained at the Palace Theatre throughout its London run, transforming the historic venue into one of the capital’s most recognisable theatrical destinations.

The figures behind the anniversary reveal the considerable scale of the production’s success.

More than 2.5 million people have attended the London production, including over 300,000 people experiencing live theatre for the first time. Across 1,762 combined performances of Part One and Part Two, the company has delivered more than 8,300 hours of performance time.

A total of 276 cast members have appeared at the Palace Theatre during the past decade, with 45 actors making their professional stage debuts in the production.

The original format asked audiences to experience the story across two complete performances, usually presented on the same day or across separate visits. That scale made HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD a rarity within the commercial West End, where most productions are designed around a single performance of approximately two or three hours.

The two-part structure allowed the production to build an expansive story around Harry Potter’s adult life, the burden of his past and the experiences of a new generation of Hogwarts students.

Written by Jack Thorne, the play is based on an original story developed by Thorne with J.K. Rowling and director John Tiffany. Set 19 years after Harry, Ron and Hermione saved the wizarding world, it follows Harry’s son Albus and Draco Malfoy’s son Scorpius as their friendship leads them into a dangerous journey through time.

The production also became known for attempting to create the visual language of the Harry Potter world through live theatrical techniques rather than simply reproducing the effects associated with the films.

Illusions, movement, lighting, sound and intricate stage mechanics are used to create transformations, spells and journeys through time in full view of the audience. That commitment to theatrical invention helped establish the show as a major international production rather than a conventional screen franchise adaptation.

Reflecting on the anniversary, Thorne credited the show’s longevity to the collective work of the casts, creatives, technicians and audiences who have shaped the production. He also highlighted the significance of introducing hundreds of thousands of people to their first theatrical experience.

Tiffany acknowledged the artists working both onstage and behind the scenes, while Friedman and Callender described the production as an undertaking that grew far beyond anything anticipated during its earliest development. The producers also pointed to the continuing relevance of its themes, including friendship, grief, family relationships and the challenge of confronting an uncertain future.

London’s success provided the foundation for a substantial international expansion. More than 14 million people have now seen HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD worldwide, with productions currently running in London, New York, Tokyo and the Netherlands, alongside a North American tour.

Previous productions have been staged in Melbourne, Hamburg, San Francisco and Toronto. The play has collected 60 major honours globally, including six Tony Awards and a record nine Laurence Olivier Awards, the highest number awarded to a play.

The current West End company is led by David Ricardo-Pearce as Harry Potter, Claire Lams as Ginny Potter and Joshua Sullivan as Albus Potter.

They appear alongside Thomas Aldridge as Ron Weasley, Naana Agyei-Ampadu as Hermione Granger, Tamia-Renée Alexandra as Rose Granger-Weasley, Oliver Boot as Draco Malfoy and Kai Spackman as Scorpius Malfoy.

The anniversary also arrives as the London production prepares for its most significant transformation since opening.

The original two-part version will play its final performance at the Palace Theatre on 20 September 2026. A reimagined one-part production will then begin performances on 9 October, allowing audiences to experience the complete story with one ticket and during a single visit.

The change brings London closer to the format used by several international productions and is intended to make the show more accessible to audiences unable to commit to two separate performances.

Although the original version is coming to an end, the production itself is not leaving the West End. Instead, its 10th anniversary represents the conclusion of one theatrical chapter and the beginning of another.

For a show built around time, inheritance and the consequences of changing the past, the transition feels unusually appropriate. After a decade at the Palace Theatre, HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD is preparing to reshape its own history while continuing its place beneath the West End lights.
