HAMILTON Marks 11 Years on Broadway With 3,956 Performances

Eleven years after taking its first Broadway bow, HAMILTON continues to make history at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s revolutionary musical celebrated its 11th Broadway anniversary on 6 August 2026. By 10 August, the production had played 3,956 performances, establishing itself as one of the longest-running shows currently appearing on Broadway.

Inspired by Ron Chernow’s 2004 biography of Alexander Hamilton, the musical combines American history, hip-hop, rhythm and blues, soul and traditional musical theatre to tell the story of the immigrant who became the United States’ first Secretary of the Treasury.

Miranda discovered Chernow’s biography while taking a holiday from his first Broadway musical, IN THE HEIGHTS, in 2008. The story of the ambitious, relentless and frequently controversial founding father quickly captured his imagination.

The first public glimpse of what would become HAMILTON arrived in 2009, when Miranda performed an early version of the opening number at the White House Evening of Poetry, Music and the Spoken Word. With then-President Barack Obama in the audience, Miranda introduced what he described at the time as a concept album about the life of Alexander Hamilton.

Six years later, the completed musical premiered Off-Broadway before transferring to the Richard Rodgers Theatre, where it officially opened on 6 August 2015.

Current Broadway cast member Simon Longnight, who plays the dual roles of the Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson, first encountered the project through that White House performance.

Longnight had already followed Miranda’s work through IN THE HEIGHTS and his television appearances. A decade after watching the White House video, Longnight found himself performing opposite Miranda in the 2019 Puerto Rico production of HAMILTON.

The Broadway production’s impact was confirmed at the 2016 Tony Awards. HAMILTON received 16 nominations, the highest number earned by a single production in Tony Awards history, and ultimately collected 11 awards.

Those victories included Best Musical, Best Book and Best Original Score for Lin-Manuel Miranda, Best Direction for Thomas Kail, Best Actor in a Musical for Leslie Odom Jr., Best Featured Actor for Daveed Diggs and Best Featured Actress for Renée Elise Goldsberry.

The production also received awards for Paul Tazewell’s costume design, Howell Binkley’s lighting, Andy Blankenbuehler’s choreography and Alex Lacamoire’s orchestrations.

Its reach has extended well beyond Broadway. There have been 10 official productions around the world, including four North American tours, a United Kingdom tour, an international tour, an Australian production, a West End production and a German-language staging.

The musical has also reached audiences far beyond the theatre through its recordings. The original Broadway cast album was released in 2015, followed by The Hamilton Mixtape in 2016. A filmed performance featuring the original Broadway cast arrived on Disney+ in 2020, bringing the Richard Rodgers Theatre production into homes around the world.

The cast recording has become the best-selling musical theatre album of all time. It received Diamond certification from the Recording Industry Association of America in 2023 after surpassing 10 million units in the United States.

The album also broke records for first-week digital sales, became the highest-charting cast recording since 1969 and made history as the first cast album to reach number one on the Rap Albums chart.

The scale of HAMILTON becomes even more remarkable when examined by the numbers.

The musical contains 47 songs and approximately 20,520 words. Its lyrics are delivered at an average rate of 144 words per minute. At the more conventional lyrical pace of many Broadway musicals, the same material could reportedly take as long as six hours to perform.

One of the most demanding passages arrives in Guns and Ships, when Lafayette delivers 19 words in three seconds, an average of approximately 6.3 words per second. Angelica Schuyler faces a similarly formidable challenge in Satisfied, singing 121 words in just 24 seconds, or slightly more than five words per second.

The amount of musical material is reflected in the production’s enormous scores. The conductor’s score contains 563 pages, while the standard score runs to approximately 200 pages. An actor beginning rehearsals faces a complete vocal score containing 606 pages.

Longnight prepares for the production’s rapid language and physical demands through an extensive vocal and breathing routine. He uses breath work, including box breathing, to establish focus, control and physical awareness before stepping onstage.

The musical’s story covers a vast historical period. Hamilton’s birth year remains disputed, with historians placing it in either 1755 or 1757. Eliza Hamilton lived until 1854, although the production concentrates primarily on the period from Hamilton’s arrival in New York in 1772 through to his death in 1804.

Across the show, the full name Alexander Hamilton is spoken 19 times.

A total of 21 historical figures are portrayed, alongside references to four American presidents. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison appear as characters, while John Adams is repeatedly discussed but never seen.

The production’s storytelling depends on far more than its lyrics. Forty-four letters are read onstage during each performance, reflecting the correspondence that preserved many of the relationships, arguments and political ideas depicted in the musical.

One real candle is lit during Burn, allowing Eliza to set fire to one of Hamilton’s letters. During My Shot, the company handles 15 mugs and four shot glasses.

Costume designer Paul Tazewell’s Tony Award-winning work encompasses 2,591 individual costume pieces. King George III’s extravagant cape weighs approximately 12 pounds, or 5.4 kilograms, while his crown adds another three pounds, or 1.4 kilograms.

Longnight’s purple Thomas Jefferson coat, worn during the character’s Act Two entrance, is among his favourite pieces in the production. It is also one of the most difficult to dance in, with its length creating a potential tripping hazard during the show’s demanding choreography.

The musical’s fatal consequences are also carefully counted. Five deaths occur onstage, including three during staged duels. Two additional deaths are referenced during the opening number.

Those figures sit alongside the production’s larger cultural legacy. HAMILTON transformed a political biography into an international theatrical phenomenon, introduced a new generation to early American history and demonstrated that dense historical storytelling could become commercially successful popular entertainment.

Eleven years after its Broadway opening, audiences are still entering the room where it happens. With thousands of performances completed and productions continuing around the world, HAMILTON shows little sign of throwing away its shot.
