Hadestown Live Capture Set for North American Cinemas in July 2026

Hadestown is heading from the stage to the big screen, with a filmed live capture of the acclaimed musical set for a North American theatrical release this summer.

Titled Hadestown: The Musical, the screen version will open in cinemas across North America on July 24, 2026, following an acquisition by Bleecker Street’s Crosswalk and LD Entertainment. The release marks a major new chapter for the Tony Award-winning production, which continues to enjoy a remarkable international life years after first arriving on Broadway.

Created by Anaïs Mitchell, who wrote both the score and book, Hadestown won the 2019 Tony Award for Best Musical and claimed seven other Tony Awards in the same season. Since then, the show has remained a major force in contemporary musical theatre, now in its seventh year on Broadway and third year in the West End.

The live capture was filmed in London and features an especially notable cast line-up, combining several original Broadway stars with the West End company. Reeve Carney appears as Orpheus, André De Shields as Hermes, Amber Gray as Persephone, Eva Noblezada as Eurydice and Patrick Page as Hades, reuniting key artists who helped define the show’s early success and enduring identity. The film is directed by Brett Sullivan of Stream and Sound.

A release date for the United Kingdom has not yet been announced.

Directed on stage by Rachel Chavkin, Hadestown reimagines the Greek myths of Orpheus and Eurydice and Hades and Persephone, weaving them together into a story of love, sacrifice, power and hope. The musical follows Orpheus as he journeys into the underworld in a desperate attempt to save Eurydice, while the long and complicated relationship between Hades and Persephone forms a parallel emotional current. Mitchell’s score, which draws on American folk traditions and New Orleans-inflected jazz, has become one of the most distinctive and celebrated in modern musical theatre.

The show’s reach has extended far beyond Broadway and the West End. In addition to a three-year North American tour, Hadestown has also been staged internationally in South Korea, Sydney, Melbourne and Amsterdam, confirming its status as one of the most globally resonant musicals of its generation.

The production and film are produced by Mara Isaacs, Dale Franzen, Hunter Arnold and Tom Kirdahy. The filmed version also features Bella Brown, Madeline Charlemagne and Allie Daniel as the Fates, Lauren Azania, Tiago Dhondt Bamberger, Ryesha Higgs, Waylon Jacobs and Christopher Short as Workers, and Lucinda Buckley, Francessca Daniella-Baker, Winny Herbert and Miriam Nyarko as Swings.

The theatrical release also reflects a broader and growing interest in live stage captures as a way of extending the life of major productions and reaching audiences beyond traditional theatre spaces. Bleecker Street previously released the live capture of Waitress in 2023, while Crosswalk has also moved into the filmed event space with recent releases including the concert film Stray Kids: The dominATE Experience. The companies have indicated plans to continue releasing more live theatre captures in the future.

For Hadestown, the film offers both a record of a landmark musical and a chance for new audiences to experience the production in a cinematic format. With a cast anchored by original Broadway performers and a work that has already proven its longevity on stage, Hadestown: The Musical is set to bring one of the defining musicals of the past decade to cinema screens in a significant new way.
