From the Palladium to Your Living Room: ‘The Wind in the Willows’ Streams on National Theatre at Home

The National Theatre has announced that its production of The Wind in the Willows will be available for streaming on National Theatre at Home beginning 8 May 2025. The production, which was captured live at The London Palladium in 2017, is set to join a growing catalogue of family-friendly titles on the platform.

Adapted from Kenneth Grahame’s classic novel, the musical features a book by Julian Fellowes and a score composed by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe. The original stage version brought to life the timeless tale with a notable ensemble cast, including Rufus Hound as Toad, Simon Lipkin as Ratty, Craig Mather as Mole, Neil McDermott as Chief Weasel, Denise Welch as Mrs Otter, and Gary Wilmot as Badger.

Directed for the stage by Rachel Kavanaugh, the production’s live capture was overseen by Tim Van Someren, ensuring that the energy of the live performance was faithfully transmitted to audiences at home. The project, originally produced by Jamie Hendry in collaboration with Gavin Kalin and Austin Shaw, remains a vibrant interpretation of a beloved literary work.

The Wind in the Willows joins over 100 productions available on National Theatre at Home, which launched in 2020. The platform, designed to bring high-quality theatrical productions directly to viewers, continues to expand its offerings with new titles added monthly. In addition to this latest release, other family-oriented productions such as Life of Pi are now accessible for streaming.

Subscriptions to National Theatre at Home are available for £9.99 per month or £99.99 per year, with all productions featuring captions and the majority including audio description. This initiative marks another significant step in making theatre more accessible to a wider audience beyond the traditional stage.
