Exciting News for Prince Fans: ‘Purple Rain’ Musical in Development

In an electrifying announcement sure to thrill Prince enthusiasts around the globe, a stage musical adaptation of the legendary artist’s film and album, ‘Purple Rain,’ is officially in the works. The project is being spearheaded by two of the theater world’s most dynamic talents: the critically acclaimed playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, known for his work on ‘Appropriate,’ and the visionary director Lileana Blain-Cruz, celebrated for her recent success with ‘The Skin of Our Teeth.’

This exhilarating musical is set to bring to life the original screenplay penned by Albert Magnoli and William Blinn, complemented by the unforgettable music and lyrics of Prince himself. The narrative dives into the heart of Minneapolis’ vibrant club scene, following the journey of a rising rock musician as he navigates the challenges of a stormy home life, fierce competition from a rival band, and the complexities of a new romance. Audiences can expect to be captivated by iconic hits such as ‘When Doves Cry,’ ‘Let’s Go Crazy,’ and the Oscar-winning masterpiece that is the title track, ‘Purple Rain.’

The original soundtrack of the ‘Purple Rain’ film, a global phenomenon, has sold over 25 million copies worldwide and achieved Platinum status an astounding 13 times. Prince, remembered as one of the greatest musicians in history, was a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and a recipient of seven Grammy awards. His untimely passing in 2016 at the age of 57 left a void in the music world that continues to be felt today.

The stage adaptation of ‘Purple Rain’ is being brought to life under the watchful eye of producer Orin Wolf, renowned for his work on the hit show ‘The Band’s Visit.’ While further details about the production are yet to be unveiled, the announcement alone has sent waves of excitement through the entertainment industry and Prince’s fan base, eagerly anticipating this tribute to the musical genius’s enduring legacy. Stay tuned for more updates on what promises to be one of the most electrifying theatrical events in recent memory.

  • Purple Rain is a classic movie I don't think it should be re- made into a musical. No one can replace Prince.
