DREAMGIRLS Broadway revival delayed beyond fall 2026

DREAMGIRLS will no longer open on Broadway in fall 2026, but the producers say the revival remains in development under director and choreographer Camille A. Brown. People reported the confirmed schedule reset on 25 August 2026, removing the only publicly announced opening window without replacing it. The project has been delayed rather than cancelled.

No replacement season or year has been announced. The production also has no confirmed Broadway theatre, preview date, opening night, cast, ticketing partner or on-sale date. Its official website continues to present DREAMGIRLS as Broadway-bound but lists no performances or venue. According to People, the producers did not identify a specific operational reason for the change, saying only in general terms that production schedules can evolve.

The revival was launched on 15 September 2025 with a fall 2026 target and was billed as the musical’s first newly directed and choreographed Broadway revival. Brown was attached from the outset to lead both the staging and choreography. DREAMGIRLS has music by Henry Krieger and a book and lyrics by Tom Eyen. Most of the wider creative team remains publicly unconfirmed.

Casting activity began well before the schedule changed. The initial plan included a worldwide search for the three members of the Dreams, with auditions announced in 12 cities across the United States, Canada, Mexico and Europe. A separate New York open call for Black female ensemble performers was announced for 13 December 2025, with self-tape submissions also accepted. No cast members or results from either process have been announced.

Jennifer Hudson joined the producing team on 11 February 2026, alongside Sonia Friedman Productions, Sue Wagner and John Johnson. The announcement identified DREAMGIRLS as her third Broadway producing credit. Hudson won the Academy Award for playing Effie White in Bill Condon’s 2006 film adaptation, but her confirmed role in Brown’s stage production is producer, not performer. AussieTheatre reported her appointment at the time, when the fall 2026 plan remained current; the loss of that window is the subsequent development.

The publicly named producer roster has also shifted during development. The September 2025 announcement credited Sonia Friedman Productions, Sue Wagner, John Johnson and LaChanze Productions. The February 2026 release adding Hudson again named Sonia Friedman Productions, Wagner and Johnson, but did not mention LaChanze Productions. No official explanation has been given for that difference, and the complete current roster has not been publicly restated. Sonia Friedman Productions’ current project page lists Brown as director, Hudson as producer and the cast as still to be announced.

The historical wording around the new production requires care. DREAMGIRLS opened at Broadway’s Imperial Theatre in 1981, directed and choreographed by Michael Bennett. It received 13 Tony nominations, won six and ran until August 1985. An international touring production returned to Broadway for several months in 1987. Brown’s staging is therefore distinct as the first Broadway revival to receive new direction and choreography, rather than the first Broadway revival of any kind.

It is also separate from the 2016 West End revival directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw. Playbill reported that the earlier production had been expected to transfer to Broadway, but that transfer did not happen. Brown is creating a new staging rather than bringing the West End version to New York.
