Dolly Parton’s life story is heading to Broadway

Dolly Parton will celebrate her 81st birthday beneath the lights of Broadway, with her autobiographical musical set to officially open in New York on 19 January 2027.

DOLLY: A TRUE ORIGINAL MUSICAL will begin preview performances at the St. James Theatre on 7 December 2026, bringing the country music legend’s journey from rural Tennessee to international superstardom to the stage. Tickets are initially available for performances through 21 November 2027.

Written with Maria S. Schlatter, the musical will present Parton’s life in her own words and through the music that accompanied her remarkable rise. The score combines newly written material with some of her most recognisable songs, including Jolene, I Will Always Love You, Coat of Many Colors and 9 to 5.

Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher will direct the production, with choreography by Emmy Award winner Mandy Moore. The creative team also includes scenic designer Derek McLane, costume designer Jennifer Moeller, lighting designer Donald Holder, sound designer Peter Hylenski, and video designers Nathan Amzi and Joe Ransom.

The production promises to move beyond the wigs, rhinestones and carefully constructed public image that have made Parton one of entertainment’s most instantly recognisable figures.

Its story will trace the singer-songwriter’s path from a large, working-class family in the Smoky Mountains to Nashville, Hollywood and worldwide fame. Along the way, it will explore the ambition, setbacks, relationships and personal choices behind a career spanning more than six decades.

Parton has sold more than 100 million records worldwide and written thousands of songs, building a catalogue that reaches far beyond country music. Her work as a singer, songwriter, actor, businesswoman and philanthropist has made her one of the relatively few entertainers capable of drawing audiences across political, geographical and generational divisions.

That wide appeal could prove particularly valuable on Broadway.

Biographical jukebox musicals have become a reliable part of the commercial theatre landscape, offering audiences familiar music alongside the story of the performer who created it. However, the crowded market also means that name recognition alone cannot guarantee success. A production must offer more than a concert disguised as a biography.

DOLLY: A TRUE ORIGINAL MUSICAL has one significant advantage. Its subject is also directly involved in shaping the narrative.

Parton has written the music and lyrics, collaborated on the book and joined the producing team alongside Danny Nozell, Adam Speers and Gavin Kalin. That involvement gives the production the opportunity to present more than a carefully sanitised tribute assembled after the fact.

Instead, the musical is being positioned as Parton’s own account of how she dreamed, struggled, stumbled and eventually became one of the world’s most enduring entertainers.

The Broadway production follows the musical’s world premiere at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Belmont University in Nashville. The sold-out engagement became the most successful production in the venue’s history, providing the creative team with an opportunity to test and reshape the show before its New York transfer.

The Nashville production divided Parton’s life among three performers. Quinn Titcomb appeared as Little Dolly, Carrie St. Louis portrayed the singer during her early professional rise, and Katie Rose Clarke represented the established star known around the world. Broadway casting has not yet been confirmed.

Parton is not entirely new to Broadway.

She previously wrote the music and lyrics for 9 TO 5: THE MUSICAL, based on the 1980 film in which she starred alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. The production opened at the Marquis Theatre in April 2009 and received four Tony Award nominations, including Best Original Score for Parton, before closing that September after 148 regular performances.

While 9 TO 5 included its famous title song, much of the stage score consisted of new theatrical material. DOLLY arrives with a different proposition, placing Parton’s life and best-known catalogue at the centre of the evening.

That means audiences will not have to wait for an encore to hear the songs that made her famous. They are embedded in the story itself.

The timing of the opening also gives Broadway one of its most distinctive theatrical birthday celebrations. Rather than simply attending a gala or anniversary concert, Parton will mark her 81st birthday by officially opening a musical about the extraordinary life that brought her there.

It is difficult to imagine a more characteristically Dolly Parton gesture. The event is deeply personal, commercially ambitious and covered in just enough sparkle to ensure nobody misses it.

Beneath the glamour, however, sits a story built for musical theatre. It is the journey of a young woman from the mountains who transformed determination, talent and an instinct for storytelling into an international career.

Broadway has seen plenty of stars turn their catalogues into musicals. Few have arrived with a story, personality and public affection quite like Dolly’s.
