Daisy Edgar-Jones Exits ‘Beautiful: The Carole King Musical’ Film, Teases New Stage Role

The ‘Normal People’ star hints at a return to theatre.

The press tour for Twisters has brought unexpected news from stage and screen star Daisy Edgar-Jones. In an interview with Variety, Edgar-Jones revealed that she has exited the much-anticipated film adaptation of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.

“That’s no longer happening,” Edgar-Jones commented. “I love Carole and I love that story, but it was a year ago that they decided [to no longer pursue it]. I did learn a lot of piano. I think it’s a gorgeous story, and the script probably needs a little more time in the oven.”

Edgar-Jones, known for her breakout role in Normal People, is no stranger to the stage. She received acclaim for her performance in the five-star production of Albion at the Almeida Theatre. Her Normal People co-star, Paul Mescal, also made headlines with his return to the venue in late 2022 in A Streetcar Named Desire.

Excitingly, Edgar-Jones hinted at her own return to theatre soon. Speaking on the red carpet for Twisters, she teased, “I’m actually going to be [back]… watch this space!”

On screen, Edgar-Jones is best known for her roles in Normal People (for which she received a Golden Globe nomination), Fresh, Where The Crawdads Sing, and Under the Banner of Heaven (which also earned her a Golden Globe nomination).

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical originally opened on Broadway on January 12, 2014, and ran for nearly six years at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre. The stage show, featuring a book by Douglas McGrath and a song list of King’s greatest hits—including “One Fine Day,” “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” “I Feel the Earth Move,” and “You’ve Got a Friend”—earned seven Tony nominations. Jessie Mueller, who starred in the title role, won the Tony Award for Best Actress.

As fans await Edgar-Jones’s next move, her departure from Beautiful leaves room for speculation about her upcoming stage role. Stay tuned for more updates on this talented actress’s return to the theatre.
