After a five-year hiatus, the Hollywood Bowl’s beloved summer musical tradition will return with a groundbreaking new production of Jesus Christ Superstar, featuring Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award winner—plus three-time Oscar nominee—Cynthia Erivo in the title role of Jesus. The show, composed by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, first gained fame as a concept album before becoming a stage sensation that explores the final days of Jesus Christ through the lens of his disciple-turned-betrayer, Judas.
Erivo, who famously played Mary on an all-female album recording of the musical, will now step into the lead for performances running from Friday, August 1, to Sunday, August 3, 2025. This marks a return to musical theatre for the star, who first captured Broadway’s attention with her Tony-winning performance in The Color Purple.
Helmed by Tony Award–winning director and choreographer Sergio Trujillo, the production will feature musical direction and conducting by fellow Tony winner Stephen Oremus. Casting is handled by the Telsey Office, and the show is produced in association with Neil Meron and Robert Greenblatt.
This revival not only brings one of the world’s most iconic rock operas to a historic stage but also signals a triumphant comeback for large-scale musical theatre at the Hollywood Bowl following pandemic-related cancellations in previous years. Tickets are expected to go on sale this spring, with fans eagerly anticipating Erivo’s transformative portrayal.
