Cynthia Erivo Set to Soar as Host of 78th Annual Tony Awards

The Broadway stage is ready for a thrilling new chapter as Cynthia Erivo, the celebrated star of Wicked, has been named the host of this year’s Tony Awards. The ceremony, scheduled for June 8, promises to be an unforgettable night of theatrical excellence, with Erivo at the helm to guide the celebration of Broadway’s finest performances.

Erivo, no stranger to the Tony spotlight, previously won Best Actress in a Musical in 2016 for her role as Celie in the revival of The Color Purple. Now, stepping into a role that marks another high point in her illustrious career, she is ready to “defy gravity” once again—not just in her performances, but as the emcee for the evening. “I am so proud and excited to take on this glorious honor,” Erivo said in a statement. “I am looking forward to ushering the theatre community at large through a night that celebrates the wonderful performances we have witnessed throughout the year. I hope I can rise to the occasion.”

Taking over the hosting duties from Ariana DeBose, who anchored the previous three ceremonies, Erivo’s appointment is seen as a homecoming to Broadway. While DeBose brought humor and lightness to the stage, Erivo’s dramatic flair and powerhouse vocals signal a fresh, musically driven take on the awards show. CBS’s Mackenzie Mitchell praised her, stating, “Cynthia is a remarkable talent and with her deep roots in the theater community, we are honored to have her host this year’s Tony Awards. There is no doubt with her innate creativity and captivating presence, she will deliver an unforgettable evening.”

In addition to her theatrical accolades, Erivo is on the cusp of achieving EGOT status, having recently been nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress for her portrayal of Elphaba in the film adaptation of Wicked. This dual recognition on both stage and screen underscores the versatile talent that has already enchanted millions of fans worldwide.

The ceremony, which is embracing an eco-friendly “going green” theme, is poised to be a joyful and inspiring celebration. Heather Hitchens, President & CEO of the American Theater Wing, along with Jason Laks, President of The Broadway League, emphasized Erivo’s role in extending the magic of musical theater beyond traditional boundaries. “Her talent defies gravity and boundaries, and we are beyond thrilled to welcome her home to Broadway for what will be a joyful and inspiring celebration of the theatrical art form. We hope audiences are ready to leap to their feet, cry tears of joy, and maybe even get up and dance.”

Nominations for the night’s awards will be unveiled on May 1, with buzz surrounding potential nods for high-profile productions such as Sunset Boulevard, led by Nicole Scherzinger, and Gypsy, starring Audra McDonald. As Broadway gears up for another season of standout performances, all eyes will be on Cynthia Erivo to elevate the evening with her unmistakable presence and unmatched artistry.

As the theater community and fans alike eagerly anticipate the upcoming ceremony, one thing remains clear: the Tony Awards this year are set to reach new heights with Erivo’s dynamic energy guiding the celebration.
