The cult musical RIDE THE CYCLONE is set to make a much-anticipated return to London this summer, following a sold-out debut season that cemented its status as one of the most distinctive and talked-about contemporary works in musical theatre. The production will once again play at Southwark Playhouse Elephant from 19 June to 22 August 2026, giving audiences another opportunity to experience a show that has steadily built a devoted international following.

Written by Jacob Richmond and Brooke Maxwell, RIDE THE CYCLONE blends dark comedy with emotional storytelling, delivering a theatrical experience that is as eccentric as it is unexpectedly heartfelt. The musical follows six teenagers who are killed in a freak rollercoaster accident and find themselves suspended in a liminal space between life and death. There, an enigmatic mechanical fortune teller offers them a final chance at life, but only one can return. What follows is a surreal and often deeply personal competition, as each character presents their case through song, memory, and imagination.

Since its initial premiere in Canada in 2008, the show has taken an unconventional path to success, gradually gaining traction through productions across North America and beyond before achieving wider recognition. Its Off-Broadway run in 2016 helped elevate its profile, while a 2021 cast recording sparked a surge in popularity online, amassing hundreds of millions of streams and introducing the musical to a new generation of fans. This organic rise has contributed to its current reputation as a cult phenomenon, with audiences drawn to its offbeat tone, inventive score, and emotionally resonant core.

The musical made its UK premiere at Southwark Playhouse in 2025, where it quickly sold out and earned strong critical response. Reviewers praised its originality and emotional range, with one critic describing it as “utterly exhilarating,” highlighting the show’s ability to balance absurd humour with genuine poignancy. Lizzi Gee returns as director and choreographer, bringing her dynamic and highly physical approach back to the production. She is joined by musical director Ben McQuigg, as well as a design team that includes Ryan Dawson Laight on set and costume design, Tim Deiling on lighting, Nina Dunn for PixelLux on video design, and Tom Marshall on sound. Illusion design is provided by Richard Pinner, further emphasising the show’s blend of theatrical craft and visual spectacle.

This cohesive creative team is central to the show’s identity, as RIDE THE CYCLONE relies heavily on inventive staging and rapid tonal shifts.
