Jon M. Chu, acclaimed director of the 2018 hit film ‘Crazy Rich Asians,’ is bringing the story’s lavish blend of young love and old money to Broadway. The project marks Chu’s Broadway debut and is developed in collaboration with Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures and author Kevin Kwan.
The musical will present an adaptation of Kwan’s bestselling novel, which centers on Rachel Chu, a Chinese American professor who discovers the immense wealth of her boyfriend’s family during a trip to Singapore. The film adaptation, featuring stars like Constance Wu, Henry Golding, and Michelle Yeoh, was a box office success, maintaining the top spot for three consecutive weeks and garnering a worldwide total of $239 million. It has since sparked anticipation for its sequel, based on Kwan’s ‘China Rich Girlfriend.’
Set to enhance the musical’s narrative are Leah Nanako Winkler with the book, and Helen Park along with Amanda Green and Tat Tong, who will provide music and lyrics respectively. The production timeline and details about its preliminary shows will be disclosed soon.
‘Crazy Rich Asians’ joins a growing list of films, such as ‘La La Land’ and ‘The Devil Wears Prada,’ being adapted for the stage. These adaptations underscore a trend where popular cinematic stories find new life in the theatre, joining other adaptations like ‘Back to the Future,’ ‘The Notebook,’ and ‘Water for Elephants’ currently captivating Broadway audiences.
