Convicted fraudster Billy McFarland announces Fyre Fest 2.0 and a Broadway Musical

Billy McFarland, is an American entrepreneur and convicted fraudster. He is best known for organizing the infamous Fyre Festival, a failed music festival that was supposed to take place in the Bahamas in 2017.

Born in 1991, McFarland was an entrepreneur from a young age. He founded several companies, including the credit card company Magnises, before starting Fyre Media with rapper Ja Rule. The Fyre Festival was marketed as a luxurious experience, featuring high-profile music acts and gourmet food on a private island. Tickets were sold at premium prices.

However, the festival was plagued by organizational issues, and when attendees arrived, they found that the event was nothing like what had been promised. Instead of luxury accommodations and high-quality food, they were met with disaster relief tents and packaged sandwiches.

In the aftermath of the festival, McFarland was charged with multiple counts of fraud related to the festival and his other business ventures. He pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud in March 2018 and was sentenced to six years in federal prison later that year. McFarland was also ordered to forfeit $26 million.

The Fyre Festival disaster and McFarland’s role in it were the subject of two high-profile documentaries, “Fyre Fraud” (Hulu, 2019) and “Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened” (Netflix, 2019).

The mastermind behind the ill-fated Fyre Fest, remains undeterred in his ambition to relaunch the festival. Making a comeback on TikTok this week, he provided a brief update on the upcoming chapter of Fyre Fest. McFarland mentioned that his investors are deliberating methods for him to settle his outstanding debt resulting from the notorious 2017 fiasco, and have consented to move ahead with a sequel to the festival. Furthermore, McFarland hinted at a prelude to “Fyre Fest 2.0” in the form of a Broadway musical, which would chronicle the series of events from the initial event.

McFarland said;

I have some huge news today … The plan was to do Fyre Festival 1.5 as a Broadway musical, but things totally blew up,” he said on TikTok. “So I’m announcing two things today: One, that Fyre Festival 1.5 is going to be a Broadway musical; and that two, we are in talks with partners to pay back all of my restitution and execute Fyre Festival 2 according to the original vision on this incredible and beautiful island. We have to do it right, guys, we have to make happen what was the dream.

In regards to what this Fyre Festival musical will be about McFarland claims;

Instead of like traditional Broadway actors, it’s going to be current music artists, combined with the Broadway format of the play — making fun of me, but also I think sharing some of the good sides as well,” he told NYC street journalist Adam Glyn of the production. “I have a killer partner who is doing all the logistics. I’m here to just fuck things up and make shit go viral.
