Casting Announced for I’M SORRY, PRIME MINISTER

The acclaimed political comedy I’M SORRY, PRIME MINISTER has confirmed its touring cast for a major UK tour following its successful West End season. This newest theatrical production continues the beloved legacy of British political satire that began with the classic television series YES MINISTER and YES, PRIME MINISTER, by bringing iconic characters back to life for live audiences across the country.

The comedy was written and directed by Jonathan Lynn, co-creator with Antony Jay of the original YES MINISTER and YES, PRIME MINISTER television series, and is co-directed by Michael Gyngell for the stage. It picks up the story of former Prime Minister Jim Hacker and his high-ranking civil servant Sir Humphrey Appleby in a new chapter that sees both characters in retirement yet still embroiled in bureaucratic chaos and comedic misadventure.

In this latest instalment, the narrative transports Hacker into academic life as head of the fictitious Hacker College in Oxford, hoping for a quiet retirement. Instead, he finds himself facing modern challenges he never expected, most notably being “cancelled” by the college committee. That dramatic threat pulls his old partner in bureaucracy, Sir Humphrey Appleby, back into his orbit. Together they find themselves wrestling with faculty politics, student protestors, shifting institutional priorities and the absurdities of modern life. The tone is sharp, witty and deeply rooted in the tradition of British political satire.

The production features a mix of actors reprising roles they have already performed in previous versions of the play. Clive Francis returns to the role of Sir Humphrey Appleby, which he first played when the show premiered at the Barn Theatre in 2023 and which he continued to portray during the West End run. Alongside him is Simon Rouse as Ex-Prime Minister Jim Hacker, a key figure in the story’s ongoing exploration of political and bureaucratic absurdities. Princess Donnough also reprises her role as Sophie. Further casting for the touring production will be announced in due course.

I’M SORRY, PRIME MINISTER has already made its mark on the London stage. Prior to announcing the tour casting, the play ran at the Apollo Theatre in the West End from 30 January to 9 May 2026, achieving strong interest and audience response. This West End transfer marked a significant milestone for the production, as it was the first show from the Barn Theatre to make the leap into London’s most prestigious theatre district.

The story behind the stage play traces its roots to the original television shows YES MINISTER and YES, PRIME MINISTER, which were broadcast on BBC between 1980 and 1988 and became cultural touchstones of British comedy. Those series revolved around Jim Hacker, a fictional minister and later prime minister, and his constant battles with the entrenched civil service represented by Sir Humphrey Appleby. The sharp writing and clever satire of those programmes earned them multiple BAFTA Awards and enduring popularity across political lines in the UK.

In addition to its UK tour schedule, producers and creative teams have detailed the technical and design contributors behind the show. The creative team includes set and costume designer Lee Newby, lighting designer Mark Henderson, sound designers Ben and Max Ringham, and casting director Marc Frankum, all of whom play a crucial role in bringing the production to life on stages nationwide.

The UK tour opens at the Arts Theatre Cambridge on Tuesday 19 May and continues to a wide array of venues across England through to early August. Stops include Richmond Theatre, Theatre Royal Bath, New Victoria Theatre in Woking, Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury, Everyman Theatre Cheltenham, Milton Keynes Theatre, Grand Opera House York, Theatre Royal Brighton, Palace Theatre Southend and finally Malvern Theatres, with performances scheduled in each venue for multiple days. Audience members can expect laughter, political satire and nostalgic callbacks to the characters and world that have entertained generations in both broadcast and stage formats.

The tour offers the chance for audiences across the UK to see this iteration of British political humour in person. The play’s success at the Barn Theatre and its West End run helped build anticipation for the tour, and the core cast’s return lends continuity and depth to the performances.

At its heart, I’M SORRY, PRIME MINISTER continues the tradition of biting satire and clever writing that has defined YES MINISTER and YES, PRIME MINISTER since their debut. It juxtaposes the quirks of political life with human foibles and the absurdities that emerge when tradition meets change. The result is a production that is both a nostalgic tribute and a fresh comedic experience in its own right.

For theatre fans and followers of British comedy, the tour presents a significant event in the 2026 theatre calendar. It allows audiences familiar with the original television series to revisit beloved characters on stage while offering newcomers a lively and humorous look at political life and bureaucracy through sharp writing and a talented cast.

Whether seen in Cambridge, Bath, Cheltenham, York or any of the other stops on the schedule, the production promises an energetic night of entertainment that upholds the legacy of one of Britain’s most cherished comedic franchises.
